Oktobar October
Journeys that connect us
Dear passengers, October is a month that reminds us that every journey tells a new story. Whether you’re trave- lling for a business meeting, to visit loved ones, or embarking on a long-awaited holiday, we are deli- ghted to be part of your journey. This year, we have further enriched our network in Spain, one of Europe’s most popular travel de- stinations. At the same time, Munich, which we resumed flights to in May, is once again attracting visitors from arou- nd the world this autumn for the renowned Okto- berfest, offering a unique opportunity to experien- ce the tradition, culture and atmosphere of one of Europe’s most famous cities. October also holds special significance for Air Serbia, as we celebrate 13 years of operations un- der our current name on 26 th October. Throughout this period, we have grown together with our pa- ssengers, expanded our destination network and enhanced our services, guided by the same goal: connecting Serbia with the world and bringing the world closer to Serbia. Thank you for the trust you place in us every day. It is our greatest motivation to continue im- proving the travel experience and providing you wi- th even more opportunities to reach the destina- tions you love. Welcome aboard.

1.000 do 2.000 metara visine kroz svaki oblak), putnicima uopšte nije bilo prijatno! Čudna zvučna izolacija Savremeni putnici vreme krate uz napredne sisteme zabave na letu, brzi vaj-faj i slušalice kojeponištavajubuku(tzv.„noise-cancelling“). Zvučna izolacija pre sto godina apsolutno nije postojala.

Wi-Fi and noise-cancelling headphones. But sound insulation was absolutely non-existent a hundred years ago. The fabric walls of the plane couldn’t dampen the roar of the engine, which was located less than two metres from the passengers. Because of this, the cabin crew handed out cotton wool balls to be pushed deep into the ears to prevent eardrums from bursting, and chewing gum to forcibly equalise the pressure experienced during sudden descents and dives of the plane (pressurised cabins had yet to be invented). “Please, open the window” Advanced HEPA filters today refresh and sterilise the air in modern aircraft every three minutes. And what if you’d felt sick during a flight a century ago? With the strong smells of fuel and burnt oil penetrating the cabin, and constant swaying, the solution was extremely analogue: passengers could open a window in the passenger cabin quite normally, in order to breathe fresh air moving at a speed of 150 kilometres per hour. Smoking, on the other hand, was like playing Russian roulette (though it would become the norm decades later, before being phased out again). The canvas covering those wooden planes was coated with a cellulose-based varnish that made the aircraft aerodynamic, but was also extremely flammable. Fur coats and hot water bottles Instead of today’s digital climate zone setting that maintains the cabin temperature at a pleasant 22°C, heating was a luxurious illusion back then. With planes flying through harsh autumn and winter weather, the temperature in the canvas cabin regularly dropped below freezing. Before boarding, passengers were given heavy sheepskin coats, blankets and even rubber water bottles filled with hot water to place in their laps. The flight attendant would pour hot tea from a metal flask, and in the process try not to spill it on everyone when encountering the first air pocket. It was an era when the very act of flying was a heroic endeavour. Today, as we stride proudly towards the first century of the existence of our national civil aviation and celebrate Air Serbia’s successes on the global market, flying has become a safe daily undertaking. So, the next time a kindly flight attendant offers you hot coffee during a flight, remember wicker armchairs, cotton wool earbuds and icy winds at 2,000 metres.
FLYING A CENTURY AGO FIVE-PASSENGER CABIN
While Air Serbia celebrates its 13 th birthday this October by recording historic successes and offering its passengers the ultimate in comfort, we hark back to how it all looked a century ago
T he Serbian national airline is celebrating its 13 th birthday under the Air Serbia name this October, but preparations are already well underway for the airline’s 100 th anniversary, which it will celebrate next year. Back in 1927, when Aeroput was founded, commercial aviation was still in its infancy and the standards of aviation were nowhere near those of today. In the build-up to the great centenary of the founding of the national airline as Aeroput, which would later become JAT and today’s Air Serbia, we return to the era of the first passenger flights. The star of that pioneering era in our skies was the French Potez 29 biplane. When we cross oceans today in powerful wide-body aircraft like the Airbus A330-200, which can accommodateover250passengers,thePotez of the time seems like a toy. It was an elegant but extremely fragile structure made exclusively of wood and canvas, which accommodated a maximum of five passengers in the cabin. Weighing at the gate We today start the journey with a swift online check-in from a smartphone, while your personal weight is a strictly private matter. However, back in the 1920s, weight was a matter of the laws of physics and a factor of sheer survival. Due to relatively
weak engines and strict payloads, there was no discretion in aviation: passengers had to personally stand on scales in front of everyone in the airport building! If you were heavier, there was a real possibility that your ticket would cost more (as tickets on many European routes were charged per kilogram of “live cargo”) or that you would simply be left on the ground, because the plane would otherwise be too heavy to take off safely. Wicker chairs When you today board the planes of Air Serbia’s modern Airbus or ATR fleets, you are awaited by carefully designed ergonomic seats with reclinable backrests. A century ago? The passengers sat in the most basic wicker chairs. The reason for this was practical: wicker was by far the lightest material. What’s unimaginable today is that the first versions of the passenger planes of that era had chairs that often weren’t even bolted to the floor at all! In the case of strong turbulence (which was constant, because flights operated at only 1,000 to 2,000 metres and went through every cloud), it was a very interesting experience. Strange sound insulation Modern travellers pass the time with advanced in-flight entertainment systems, high-speed

Often boiled down to folklore tents and pints of beer by global pop culture, the real charm of the Bavarian capi- tal lies in the tension between brutal engineering efficien - cy and almost Mediterranean hedonism. This is a city where the headquarters of tech and automotive giants are just a ten-minute bike ride from flocks of sheep gra- zing undisturbed in the city’s parks. Munich’s residents value tradition, but don’t treat it like a museum piece. They prefer to live that tradition on a daily basis. Every day, at precisely 11am and 12pm, the city’s central square, Ma- rienplatz, comes to a temporary stand- still. The reason is the Glockenspiel, a massive mechanism located in the tower of the New Town Hall. Unlike ordinary astronomical clocks, this serious engineering endeavour da- tes back to 1908 and is composed of 43 bells and 32 life-sized copper figures. The show is divided into two acts: the upper level recreates the la- vish 1568 wedding of Duke Wilhelm V (culminating in a jousting tourna- ment that’s always won by the Bava- rian knight), while the lower level pre- sents the traditional “Coopers’ Dance”, 1. 2.
This is probably the only place on the planet where you will see people dressed in formal business suits and carrying surfboards on bicycles in a landlocked city. Located at the very entrance to the English Garden, on the Eisbach canal, is a standing wave. It was created by accident in the 1970s, when local authorities placed concre- te blocks in the canal to slow the cu- rrent. The water is freezing and the
wave is unpredictable, and only profe- ssionals are allowed to surf. The sce- ne unfolds according to strict street etiquette - surfers take turns one at a time, while the audience watching from the bridge, together with other surfers, praise good moves by banging on their boards. This is an example of the raw, authentic “cool” factor that instantaneously shatters the myth of German seriousness.

VIKTUALIJENMARKT VIKTUALIENMARKT
Just a short walk away from Marienplatz is Europe’s most famous farmers’ market. Created at the beginning of the 19 th century by a decree of King Maximilian I Jo- seph, the Viktualienmarkt has long ceased to be a place to buy cheap groceries, representing the ultimate epi- centre of outdoor gastronomy. Its more than 140 stalls sell rare mountain cheeses, fresh truffles and more than 50 different, exotic potato varieties at the iconic Caspar Plautz stall. At the very centre of the market is a large beer garden. Tradition dictates that you can bring and eat your own food here (whether you bought it at the market or brought it from home), provided you buy a drink in the garden itself.

DEUTSCHES MUSEUM

If you think tech museums are boring, this one will change your mind instan- tly. The Deutsches Museum, a visio- nary work of engineer Oskar von Miller from 1903, is the world’s largest mu- seum of science and technology. Lo- cated on its own island on the Isar Ri- ver, the museum doesn’t offer copied models, but reality: it has an original
U-1 submarine from 1906, parts of the first V-2 rockets, original Wright brot - hers’ aircraft and even an authentic mi- ne shaft that you literally descend to go under the building. There are also daily Faraday cage demonstrations, where staff members sit inside a sp- here while being struck by real light- ning of several hundred thousand volts.

Munich is a global superpower when it comes to fine art, and the city’s Maxvorstadt district is home to three greats: the Old Pinakothek, New Pina- kothek and Modern Pinakothek (Alte, Neue, Pinakothek der Moderne). The Alte Pinakothek, designed by Leo von Klenze, houses monumental canva- ses by Rubens and Dürer’s famous Self-Portrait in a Fur Coat. (Important note: The New Pinakothek is currently undergoing a major reconstruction un- til 2029, but its key 19 th -century works, including Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, ha- ve been transferred to the Old Pina- kothek). In contrast, the Pinakothek der Moderne is a temple to contem- porary design, architecture and Andy Warhol. It’s worth knowing that the entrance fee for these museums on Sundays is a symbolic one euro.

MINHENSKA REZIDENCIJA MUNICH RESIDENCE
Forget Versailles for a moment. The former royal palace of the Wittelsbach dynasty, located in the very centre of Muni- ch, is the largest inner-city palace in Germany. With over 130 rooms open to the public, the Residence is a shocking show of aristocratic power. Its most impressive part is the Antiqu- arium, a gigantic Renaissance hall dating back to 1568 and featuring lavishly painted vaulted ceilings, built exclusively so that Duke Albert V would have a place to display his collecti- on of Roman busts. The complex also includes the Cuvilliés Theatre, where Mozart personally conducted the premiere of his opera Idomeneo.

The BMW Museum is located right next to the main BMW plant and the famous headquarters that were built to resemble fo- ur cylinders. Designed in 1973 in the shape of a silver bowl, the museum tells the story of the brand’s engineering evolu- tion – from the first aircraft engines to modern cars. Across the street is BMW World, a massive, futuristic glass and steel exhibition hangar, with a roof designed to resemble a twin tor- nado. NAJBOLJI POGLED THE BEST VIEW
Every metropolis has that one elevated spot that offers the best view over the city. In Munich, that spot is the tower of St. Peter’s Church, the city’s oldest parish church, whi- ch dates back to before the official founding of Munich. To reach the tower’s 91-metre-high top, you have to climb 299 narrow, wooden steps. The façade of the tower bo- asts eight clocks, ensuring that the time is visible from absolutely every corner of the old town. The reward for the climb is a stunning panoramic view over the roofs of the New Town Hall, the towers of the famous Frauenkir- che cathedral and, on clear autumn days, a perfect shot of the snow-capped Alps in the distance.

10. HOFBROJHAUS HOFBRÄUHAUS
Hofbrojhaus je istorijska institucija
Minhena koja već vekovima okuplja ljubitelje piva iz celog sveta Hofbräuhaus is a historic Munich institution that has gathered beer lovers from around the world for centuries
Yes, it’s packed with tourists. No, that absolutely mustn’t stop you from visiting. Hofbräuhaus isn’t just a pub, it’s an institution. It was founded in 1589 by Duke Wilhelm V, because he didn’t like imported beer and decided to open his own court brewery. Over 10,000 litres of beer are to- day drunk there on a daily basis, in huge halls with pa- inted ceilings. And even Mozart and Lenin drained the- ir beer mugs here. Representing a special curiosity are steel lockers where around 400 regular local guests ha- ve kept their personal stoneware beer mugs under lock and key for generations. Order a pint and a white sausa- ge, then watch the chaotic, noisy Bavarian spectacle ac- companied by a brass band.

ETNOLOGY FEST Kulturno nasleđe Srbije kao diplomatski potpis
pruga predsednika Srbije.

ETHNOLOGY FEST Serbia’s Cultural
Heritage as a Diplomatic Signature U nder the patronage of Tama- ra Vučić, the wife of the Presi- dent of the Republic of Serbia, the Ethnographic Museum in Belgrade hosted the "Ethnol- ogy Fest", an international festival dedicat- ed to the promotion of intangible cultural heritage and a contemporary interpretation of tradition. The festival's creator, Gordana Goga Grubješić, devised a programme that connects handicrafts, design, and cultural diplomacy, with a clear aim – for heritage not just to be preserved as a memory, but to be lived, used, and passed on. The idea behind the festival rests on two parallel trajectories. The first is bring- ing tradition closer to younger generations through a contemporary aesthetic and com- municative framework, whilst the second is directed towards the international pres- entation of Serbia as a country with a rich and diverse cultural identity. "We wish to present our tradition, cul- tural heritage, and handicrafts in a way that resonates with the modern individual," it was highlighted during an informal gath- ering between the festival's patron, Tama- ra Vučić, and the women who nurture an- cient crafts, with an emphasis that its true strength lies precisely in the fusion of the old and the new. This year's edition of the festival also has a special international dimension – the country in focus is Kazakhstan, thereby fur- ther strengthening the idea of cultural dia- logue and exchange between nations that foster rich heritage. The participation of the new Ambassador of Kazakhstan to the Re- public of Serbia, Mr Bolat Imanbayev, fur- ther confirmed the diplomatic significance of the event and its role in connecting cul- tures. In this spirit, special attention was al- so given to diplomatic gifts, which become cultural ambassadors in their own right. As
to royal families, as gifts to ambassadors, presidents and first ladies. The scarves that promote our cultural heritage have been re- ceived by, among others, the wives of the presidents of the United States of Ameri- ca and Turkey, as well as the former Ger- man Chancellor Angela Merkel. Alongside hand-painted and printed scarves and ties, we have also started printing on wool,’ says Maruška Topalović, owner of the ‘Maruš- ka’ brand. Tamara Vučić, who herself often wears clothing and accessory pieces by domes- tic producers – from ‘Maruška’ scarves, through ‘Maridruna’ jumpers, bags and footwear, to bags by the ‘Staparska ruža’ Association and ‘Sirogojno’ jumpers – em- phasises that fashion in this context goes beyond aesthetics. It becomes a form of non-verbal communication and an intro- duction to dialogue. "It is often the initial spark for conver- sation. Fashion is a silent language, but a highly powerful way to establish first con- tact," she pointed out, noting that precise- ly such details in diplomatic protocol of- ten open the floor for a deeper exchange. Thus, the "Ethnology Fest" is positioned not merely as an exhibition or a cultural event, but as a platform for encounters – between tradition and modernity, domes- tic creators and international guests, the past and the future. The aim of the event, which this year celebrates its jubilee 10th edition, is for Serbian cultural heritage to be presented as living, dynamic, and inspiring, as a re- source for the future that is continually re- interpreted through new generations, aes- thetics, and encounters.
Tamara Vučić points out, the idea is that the gifts Serbia presents during interna- tional encounters are simultaneously au- thentic, practical, and symbolic. "We strive to make them personal gifts, items they will use and which will always remind them of Serbia, our hospitality, and our tradition," she states, highlighting that an informal yet strong cultural communi- cation is built through such details. In previous years, as part of this prac- tice, First Ladies received handmade gifts inspired by Serbian heritage – from Sirogo- jno jumpers, to Maridruna bags and "Maruš- ka" scarves personalised with initials, right through to an Ercegovac hat presented to the First Lady of Uzbekistan. "We always endeavour to include gold embroidery, per- sonalisation, and motifs that carry the iden- tity of our region," noted the wife of the Serbian President. ‘Thanks to the support of the state, my scarves have gone all over the world –
Želimo da našu tradiciju i kulturno nasleđe predstavimo na način blizak savremenom čoveku / We wish to present our tradition and cultural heritage in a way that resonates with the modern individual – Tamara Vučić
