POBEDNIK: Čuvar na ivici grebena (1928)

PRESTONICA NA VISINI THE HEIGHTS OF THE CAPITAL Pet tačaka koje su Beograd podigle u nebo Five points that elevated Belgrade to the sky

POBEDNIK Guardian on a cliff edge (1928)

At a height of just 14 metres (with its pedestal), Pobednik (the Vic- tor monument) is far from being the city’s tallest structure, but it occupies by far the most dominant elevated position. Erected in 1928 on the very edge of a cliff in Kalemegdan Fortress, this work of sculptor Ivan Meštrović dominates the confluence of the city’s two rivers. An interesting historical fact is that this monument was originally intended to adorn Terazije Square. However, Belgraders of the time were appalled by the notion of a naked man standing over the centre of the city, so the monument was “banished” to the for- tress. It turned out to be the best urban planning mistake in history, with this elevated position making it the visual epicentre of the city. It today occupies the most beautiful observation point of Kalemeg- dan’s Upper Town. The plateau around the monument offers an un- interrupted view of the confluence of the Sava and the Danube, Great War Island and the plain that stretches northwards. Visiting the Victor monument in October entails walking through millennia of history in the immediate vicinity: from the fortress’s Roman Well and Clock Tower, to the Military Museum with exhibits displayed outdoors. Kalemegdan is the city’s largest urban park and its most important historical complex. And standing at the foot of Pobed- nik in the late afternoon hours provides the most beautiful sunset scenes in Belgrade.
