travellers. Staying here you will encounter young couples, solo travellers, business- people and even families enjoying great hotel breakfasts. There is also plenty of choice when it comes to the usual luxury favourites. The Mandarin Oriental’s Ory Bar is the chicest venue in the city, with bright and airy rooms, and a rooftop garden where you can play mahjong during the summer. The 300-room Hotel Bayerischer Hof is a true old-time Grande Lady, while the Charles Hotel, a Rocco Forte group hotel, is a contempo- rary favourite. Almost sculpturally white, it is located on the very edge of the Old Bo- tanical Garden. Where to wine and dine The historic slaughterhouse quarter offers seafood at the cosy Atlantik Fisch red restaurant. The compact brick build- ing housing it is converted into a small disco on weekends. Just across the street is Wirtshaus im Schlachthof, a classic Ba- varian beer hall known for its live con- certs and comedy shows. A ten-minute walk away is Alte Utting. Once a ferry popular among lovers of a nearby Ba- varian lake, after being retired, the ship MSS Utting was – thanks to two broth- ers – relocated to an abandoned railway bridge and transformed into one of Mu- nich’s top nightlife venues. Back in the city centre, you’ll find the best Michelin recommended Ba-
varian fine dining experiences at Res- taurant Pfistermühle. Try their salted cod under the vaulted ceiling of this 16 th -century mill, or take a seat outside, on the picturesque cobbled street. Near- by is Zum Dürnbräu, a more relaxed option for classic Bavarian fare. Their succulent duck is not to be missed. Among the city’s other important ad- dresses for good food are the steakhouse Little London Bar & Grill, offering serious German steaks, while Brenner Grill, with its a huge outdoor, open-fire grill, seems to have been transported straight out of the 1990s, in the best possible sense. It is provided with a special energy thanks to its spacious dining hall and profession- al atmosphere, in which it is important to both see and be seen. Where to shop It would be unforgiveable for us to fail to mention Munich’s Viktualien- markt, a lively daily food market just off Marienplatz, featuring countless
stalls selling local produce and special- ities, alongside biergarten seating, where washing all the food down with cold beer is a given. A few more noteworthy stops The coolest place for a night out in Munich is the Schlachthofviertel, a for- mer slaughterhouse district. Before sit- ting down to dine, catch a performance at the new headquarters of the Münchner Volkstheater, whose artistic director is known for his work on the famous Ober- ammergau Passion Play in the year 2000. Or take a stroll to the Bahnwärter Thiel cultural centre, with its excellent shops, craft studios and a huge indoor-outdoor nightclub, which is open during the sum- mer months and offers plenty of seating. Graffiti is legal here, so you can spend an hour or two watching the artists at work. Above them are piles of empty paint spray cans, which are collected in tall metal mesh structures that are them- selves a kind of sculpture.
