RITAM GRADA / RHYTHM OF THE CITY

PALATA BEOGRAD Zlatno doba sedamdesetih (1974)

PALACE OF BELGRADE Golden Age of the ‘70s (1974) When completed according to the design of architect Branko Pešić, the Palace of Belgrade, known locally a “Beogradanka” (Belgrade Lady), took the throne. At 101 metres tall, and with 24 floors of black aluminium and glass, it represented the pinnacle of Yugoslav modern- ism. It was also the region’s first “smart building”, with computerised heating systems and window blinds that lowered automatically depending on the sun’s position. Cult radio station Studio B broadcast for decades from its top floor, making it the city’s highest voice. Occupying the corner of Kralja Milana and Masariko- va streets, this building recently underwent serious in- ternal reconstruction to become a modern “hub” for IT and businesses, while its dark exterior remains protect- ed as a monument of culture. Just 50 metres away is Cvetni Trg (Flower Square), which is packed with ex- cellent cafés where you can sit and sip an espresso while observing this dark monolith.
