B eogradski džez festival, naša najstarija i međunarodno najpriznatija džez manifestacija, na 42. izdanju pono- vo donosi vrhunski program, predstavljajući najaktuel- nije tokove savremenog džeza. Među njima posebnu pažnju izazi- va trio „The Messthetics“, koji vuče korene iz slavnog alterna- tivnog rok benda „Fugazi“. Oštrom postpankerskom triju se, iznenađujuće, pridružuje vodeći džez muzičar sveta 2025. (go- dina kada je impresionirao i našu publiku), tenor saksofonista Džejms Brendon Luis. Zagrljaj rokenrola i džeza donosi snaž- ni gruv, beskompromisne solaže i vatreni nastup najavljujući, bez sumnje, džez događaj sezone u Beogradu. Sa američke sce- ne na Festival stižu i trubač Rob Mazurek, zatim Markiz Hil, laureat takmičenja „Thelonious Monk“ i najveći talenat među trubačima u „DownBeatu“ 2016, te trio violiniste Aruna Ra- mamurtija, koji ostvaruje hipnotični spoj južnoindijske kar- natske tradicije i fjužna. Saksofonista Tino Trakana predstavlja najbolji džez album u Ita- liji po mišljenju kritičara. Oktet sa šestoricom duvača meša tra- diciju Nju Orleansa sa italijanskom muzičkom romantikom, or- ganski spajajući udaljene svetove. Evropsku „džez reprezentaciju“ predstavljaće i superstar duo španskog pijaniste Danijela Garsije i švajcarskog vokaliste Andreasa Šerera. Izbor sa srpske džez scene donosi susrete sa vodećim sviračima srednje i mlađe generacije. TRADICIJA Beogradski džez festival
TRADITION The Belgrade jazz festival
T he 42 nd edition of the Belgrade Jazz Festival, Serbia’s old- est and most internationally recognised jazz event, will once again provide a top programme presenting the lat- est trends in contemporary jazz. Between 21 st and 24 th October, the audience at the Belgrade Youth Centre is awaited by 13 con- certs of world-renowned artists and a concluding jam session. The view of a stylised trumpet merging with the waters of the Sava and Danube beneath Kalemegdan Fortress, marking the festival’s visual theme, provides a visible notion of this year’s slogan “Jazz Confluence”. That’s because Belgrade is truly a confluence where the world’s greatest heroes of this genre have come together for over half a century, as well as the most diverse styles that jointly define jazz. For the first time in the history of the Belgrade Jazz Festival, the biggest star comes from the world of blues: the un- surpassed Ana Popović. Throughout her career, she has received ten nominations for the Blues Award (the Oscar of the blues com- munity), headlined the world’s top blues festivals and served as the face of the covers of prestigious blues and guitar magazines. Ana this year celebrates her 50 th birthday and the 25 th anniver- sary of the release of her debut solo album Hush, while the Bel- grade blues scene is also celebrating its 45 th birthday. The selection of American bands reflects today’s diversity of the genre in the land of its birth. Special attention among them is attracted by the instrumental trio The Messthetics, which has its roots in the famous post-hardcore rock band Fugazi. This post- punk trio is surprisingly joined by the world’s leading jazz musi- cian in 2025 (when he also impressed our audience), tenor sax- ophonist James Brandon Lewis. This embrace of rock’n’roll and jazz brings strong grooves, uncompromising solos and a fiery per- formance, heralding what is undoubtedly the jazz event of the season in Belgrade. Other American performers at this year’s fes- tival include trumpeter Rob Mazurek, followed by Marquis Hill, laureate of the Thelonious Monk competition and the greatest rising talent among trumpeters in DownBeat magazine’s 2016 Critics Poll, as well as the trio of violinist Arun Ramamurthy, which achieves a hypnotic blend of South Indian Carnatic tra- dition and modern jazz fusion. Saxophonist Tino Tracanna presents what critics hailed as the best jazz album in Italy. His octet blends New Orleans tradition with Italian musical romance, organically merging distant worlds. The European “jazz representation” will be represented by the super- star duo of Spanish pianist Daniel Garcia Diego and Swiss vocal- ist Andreas Schaerer. The Serbian jazz selection brings encounters with leading performers of the middle and younger generation.
