W hen it comes to artistic music in Belgrade, mid-October is tradi- tionally reserved for one of the most prestigious cultural events of the entire region. Founded way back in 1969, the Belgrade Music Festival, better known as BEMUS, represents the oldest and by far the most prominent music festival in Serbia. Over the more than five decades of its existence, BEMUS has profiled itself as one of Southeast Europe’s most sig- nificant and recognisable classical music festivals, and has proudly enjoyed the status of a cultural event of special and strategic importance to the City of Belgrade. Although it has always lovingly devoted special attention to pro- moting talented local artists and their creativity and premiere performances of works by Serbian composers, the festival has built its impeccable interna- tional reputation primarily by presenting the world’s most attractive pro- grammes. Over the last decade alone, thanks to BEMUS, Belgrade has host- ed some of the most outstanding contemporary soloists.
