FAMILY, CHAOS, AND SWEET POTATO SOUFFLE BRINGING OLD AND NEW TRADITIONS TOGETHER

As millions of people around the country start preparing for a great holiday filled with gratitude, family time, and delicious turkey, I figured it would be a great time to reflect on all the fantastic Thanksgiving memories I’ve cultivated with my own family. Some people dread big holiday celebrations in rooms filled to the brim with people, noise, and chaos, but to me, that’s what Thanksgiving is all about. For as long as I can remember, my family and I would load up in our car and drive to my mom’s brother’s house outside of Philadelphia on the last Thursday in November. When we’d arrive, the house would already be full of aunts, uncles, and cousins, all of whom looked forward to this day just as much as I did. As a kid, I especially looked forward to spending the day roughhousing with my cousins, who were near the same age as me. We would scarf down our Thanksgiving meal and spend the entirety of the day outside banging basketballs against the side of the house and tackling each other in the mud. If we didn’t walk away from

the holiday with a full stomach and a handful of bumps and bruises, it wasn’t a real Thanksgiving. While hanging out with my cousins was always my favorite aspect of Thanksgiving, my mom’s sweet potato souffle was definitely a close second. It was one of those dishes that came to symbolize Thanksgiving for the whole family, and we begged her to make it every year. I can’t say that it was the healthiest option, but that seems to be the case with all the best dishes. “SOME PEOPLE DREAD BIG HOLIDAY CELEBRATIONS IN ROOMS FILLED TO THE BRIM WITH PEOPLE, NOISE, AND CHAOS, BUT TO ME, THAT’S WHAT THANKSGIVING IS ALL ABOUT.” Although I’ve had the opportunity to participate in the same great Thanksgiving tradition for as long as I can remember, I am excited to try out a different tradition for the first time this year. My girlfriend Bridgette and I have been together for four years, and, while she joined me and my family for Thanksgiving last year, this year, we will be celebrating the holiday with her

parents in their home in Wilmington, NC. Her parents spent the last 25 years of their lives in Ramsey, NJ, so when they moved to Wilmington — which is only two hours away from us — we couldn’t pass up an opportunity to help them host their first Thanksgiving feast in their new home. While nothing can replace the memories you make during the holidays as a kid, one of the best parts of adulthood is finding a way to amalgamate past traditions with new ones. In this way, I’m so thankful to Bridgette and her parents for bringing me in on their own family traditions. They have been so warm and welcoming and have always made me feel like I’m part of the family. And that’s what the holidays are really about after all. While the outdoor games and the tasty food are definite perks, the best part of Thanksgiving genuinely is being with family.

From my family to yours, Happy Thanksgiving!

THE SPORT THAT UNITED A COUNTRY THE 1995 RUGBY WORLD CUP

In early November, the 2019 Rugby World Cup will wrap up in Japan. The international competition brings out world- class athletes and entertainment. While matches are certainly intense, respect for the competition and for referees is a core tenet of rugby culture. After going head-to-head with an opponent, you’ll still shake hands, and maybe have a beer together, at the end of a match. This principle was on full display nearly 25 years ago at the 1995 Rugby World Cup final in South Africa. The South African Springboks were up against the New Zealand All Blacks, and a number of factors made this an exceptional match. Just a few years earlier in 1991, apartheid legislation had been repealed in South Africa. The policy had left a deep cut, and the country still had a long journey toward healing and reparation. Nelson Mandela, who had been elected in 1994, was set on championing a “rainbow nation” in this new postapartheid era. Rugby started in England in the late 1800s, and colonizers took it to South Africa, where South Africans of every

color embraced the game. It was controversial because of its connection to the architects of apartheid, but Mandela saw rugby’s potential as a symbol of hope and unity for a country that desperately needed it. Springboks captain Francois Pienaar (played by Matt Damon in “Invictus,” the film adaptation of this event) thought the president’s support of the team was a brilliant act. “During those six weeks, what happened in this country was incredible,” Pienaar said. Just before the final game that would decide the 1995 World Cup winners, Mandela sported a Springboks jersey and stood behind the team. Through a hard-fought match, South Africa came out on top, and, after receiving the trophy from President Mandela, Pienaar explained the atmosphere of the event: “When the final whistle blew, this country changed forever.” If the 1995 World Cup was any indication, the camaraderie inherent to rugby can transcend all kinds of barriers. Meet a fellow rugby player or fan in any part of the world, and you’ll likely forge an instant kinship. In 2021, you can look forward to cheering on the women’s teams during the Rugby World Cup in New Zealand.

3 HIDDEN GEMS CELEBRATING AMERICAN ART GO TO AN ART MUSEUM DAY

Go to an Art Museum Day, which takes place on Nov. 9, is very clear about how you should celebrate it: Go to an art museum! This holiday is an important reminder of the wealth of art and creativity housed in our nation’s museums. Many facilities participate in the holiday with events and discounted entry fees. While East Coast art meccas like New York’s Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art immediately come to mind, there are some hidden gems in our country that deserve a second (or first) look.

the museum is also filled with 14 galleries (over 5,000 pieces) from artists who evoke the relationship between humans and the natural world, including pieces from Georgia O’Keeffe, John James Audubon, John Clymer, and Robert Kuhn. In 1994, the museum received the Wyoming Humanities Award, and, in 2008, it received its current designation as the National Museum of Wildlife Art of the United States from Congress. Experience American history, art, and design at this impressive museum that was “designed to allow visitors the pleasure of discovery and exploration.” From architecture to impressionist art, the 35 acres of this museum house 39 different structures, each celebrating a subsection of American art. NORTH CAROLINA MUSEUM OF ART North Carolina

Located right here in Raleigh, the NCMA dates back to 1947 when the North Carolina General Assembly appropriated funds for the purchase of art, making NC first state in the nation to use public funds to do so. Since then, the NCMA has gone on to include art from around the world, spanning the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries. It boasts 30 works by Auguste Rodin, making it the leading repository of his work in the southeastern United States. Their 164-acre Museum Park integrates art into nature, and their mission revolves around educational enrichment and creative potential. It’s a wonderful place in our very own backyard.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF WILDLIFE ART Wyoming

It’s hard to beat the setting of this museum. Located in Jackson, Wyoming, the National Museum of Wildlife Art is nestled into a cliff that overlooks the pristine National Elk Refuge. As if the beautiful environment weren’t enough,

CELEBRATING GIVING TUESDAY SUPPORTING THE PEOPLE YOU BELIEVE IN

HOW YOU CAN CELEBRATE Now is the perfect opportunity to support your community and the causes you believe in. The best part of this holiday is that “giving” doesn’t just refer to donating money. People can give back by volunteering their time to help a nonprofit business, donating goods and food, or just buying a stranger some lunch. Even the smallest actions can have the biggest impact.

November is usually all about Thanksgiving, but it isn’t the only holiday that encourages generosity. Giving Tuesday is a phenomenal celebration in which millions of people from across the globe are inspired to spend 24 hours giving back to the communities they love. ORIGIN AND GOAL Giving Tuesday is celebrated every year on the Tuesday following Thanksgiving, and this year, the holiday lands on Dec. 3! It was established in 2012 by the United Nations Foundation and New York’s 92nd Street Y as a response to consumer-driven holidays like Black Friday and Cyber Monday. The purpose of the holiday was to spread the spirit of giving, not only for the people in our nation but individuals across the world. The goal is “to create

a massive wave of generosity that lasts well beyond that day and touches every person on the planet.” TECHNOLOGY AT ITS BEST Through the use of social media and technology, the organization hopes to encourage and spread generosity on a global scale using the hashtag #GivingTuesday. The website states that “... technology and social media could be used to make generosity go viral; that people fundamentally

If you’re interested in

want to give and talk about giving.” Through massive social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter, the individuals and companies participating in Giving Tuesday can spread their missions and messages all over the world, encouraging others to do the same.
