Otolaryngolgy GEO - FACULTY HANDBOOK

Since individuals normally appointed as Instructors have recently completed a doctorate/post-doctorate period and have minimal experience in professional activities, it is expected that a significant portion of their time will be devoted to their respective bench and/or clinical research activities with documentable results in the form of publications in peer reviewed journals, presentations and academic performance. Teaching activities will be expected but will not take the place or interfere with the development of professional expertise. Aptitude for developing expertise in research, teaching and/or clinical service will be judged by recommendations from mentors, publications, presentations and academic performance.

Assistant Professor

Development of a productive and funded research program, excellence in teaching and, if appropriate, skills in patient care are expected at the Assistant Professor Level and documented in the form of publications in peer reviewed journals and abstracts and presentations at national and international meetings. When averaged over a career interval, a minimum productivity of two publications per year in peer reviewed journals is indicative of maintaining a research workload.

Associate Professor

Faculty who have reached the level of Associate Professor with tenure will be expected to have approximately 15-20 publications in peer reviewed journals approved by the faculty of Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery or a journal of equal stature and quality. Independence as a scholar is documented by the candidate’s being first or senior author on publications, the major creative or ideational force in the planning and development on projects, and principal investigator or co-investigator on research grants. It will be incumbent upon faculty members to demonstrate evidence of being self- supporting in research. The quality of the research is more important than the quantity at this level. Research and the reports of results must reflect original, independent studies which contribute new knowledge to the field. The faculty members will also be required to show promise of continuation of that support. Evidence of peer recognition for research activities may include serving on study sections, on editorial boards, or as reviewers for high quality journals. Associate Professors in Research Tenure Track are expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching which may include lecturing and supervision of medical students, residents, fellows, and graduate students. Service should include meaningful contributions to committees at the departmental college, university, community, state, regional, national and international levels. Serving in administrative positions in the department is an important contribution and offices held in national organizations indicate greater recognition for contributions to the discipline.
