Lifejackets save lives The OPP regional office reports a 10-year low in the number of fatal boating accidents in Eastern Ontario with the start of another summer boating season. But boaters are still urged to remember to wear lifejackets or some kind of personal floatation device when out on the water. Last year, the number of boating fatalities totalled 20 compared to 28 in 2010. Police statistics still show that most boating fatalities are a result of failure to wear a lifejacket or a personal floatation device. This includes both motorized boats and paddle-type craft like kayaks or canoes.
