APRIL CELEBRATES NATIONAL REBUILDING DAY - APRIL 29, 2023 By Linda Garvey, Metro’s PWB Council Chair; Coppola Brothers LLC April is “National Rebuilding They are a non-profit organization in the US dedicated to sustaining affordable homeownership and regenerating neighborhoods by providing free house repairs and improvements to neighbors in need. This event was started by a small group of citizens in Midland, Texas who recognized a rising need in their community in 1973 where homes in their neighborhood had fallen into disrepair, and their neighbors couldn’t afford to renovate them themselves. The group gave their time and skills to help their neighbors rehabilitate their homes. Recognizing the potential impact of their effort, the group founded “Christmas in April” with the intention of undertaking repair and rehabilitation work in their neighborhood each April. The group’s positive work spread slowly at first, but it eventually gained national prominence. The mission expanded from delivering service once a year in April to bringing together partners from all walks of life to aid the neighbors every year. In 1988, they established a national headquarters and changed their name to “Rebuilding Together”. Why celebrate this day? It brings local communities, contractors and sub-contractors together by assisting with the rehabilitation of individuals in need’s homes. Majority of homes in the US were built before 1980 and require regular repair. The issue is that most low-income homeowners cannot afford to perform home repairs. This organization is here to help. Despite its origins in Chicago, National Rebuilding Day is open to any community looking to be good neighbors and willing to assist with any repairs. Month” - April 29th is the official day of recognition. The group behind this effort is called “Rebuilding Together” .
