Mr. Lyman Stewart passed i~to the presence of God September 28, 1923, - ·- ----·=-- ..._ ..._....... .:::...~.:-;-...---- - --- thus .ending a long and faithful Christian life and testimony. Perhaps the most eloquent eulogy that could be given of him is to quote a portion of the resolution adopted by the Biola Board of Directors, which reads, in part as follows: when Lyman Stewart fell asleep on September 28, 1923, in the City of Los Angeles, at the ripe age of eighty-three years, it could have been said of him as of one of old, "know ye not there is a prince and a great man fallen this day in Israel 11 ; for he was "a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith." As the founder of the Union Oil Company, a large and successful business enterprise, he would have been readily accorded a first place among our leading citizens; but it is not of Lyman Stewart as a sue- cessful business man that we desire to speak, but of Lyman Stewart, the man of God, the man of faith, the humble generous Christian gentleman who by his daily walk and conversation demonstrated that his supreme passion was to exalt the crucified Jesus as the savior of the world, in order that "He being lifted up, might draw all men unto him." His devotion to the Bible as the Word of God, his widespread ._ missionary activities, and his generous support of many worthy Christian activit~es not only illustrated the catholicity of his spirit but also demonstrated his personal acceptance of the imperative obligation of the Great Com- mission to "make disciples of all the nations," and above all things, he desired to please his risen and ascended Lord in the execution of this task. The passion for the salvation of men also caused him to found and ·- cherish the Bible Institute of Los Angeles as the best possible agency through which to prepare men and women for the supreme task of evangel-
