IN FOCUS: CLEAN UPS Saving the Blue organize regular clean-ups: during each beach clean the team first walks the beach, road or mangroves in one direction and then collects trash on the return leg. This practice allows the team to assess discarded litter and, in turn, helps them plan and target items on the walk back. Filling bags with trash is regrettably far too easy, and this procedure avoids not only damaging their fragile (compostable) bags during their two walks, but also allows them to be efficient and specific with trash collection.
Results
- Saving the Blue has conducted over 20 dedicated beach clean-ups where they focused on plastic bottles, discarded fishing gear, cosmetic containers and bags. - The nonprofit estimate over 2,000 pounds of trash has been removed and safely dis - posed of.
