COMMUNITY: SAVING THE BLUE

IN FOCUS: SHARK AND FISHER PROJECT Saving the Blue begun a new community fisher project in April 2023 which focuses on the interactions between sharks and the fishers of the Bahamas. The project aims to gain a deeper understanding of these interactions, positive and negative, which in turn will gen- erate new data that helps them determine solutions that mitigate negative encounters, injuries, or death. Early discussions indicate that many water users are under-educated or under-prepared for confrontational shark encounters. A lack of knowledge and/or equipment places them in vulnerable situations that Saving the Blue believes can be reduced— or, better yet, avoid- ed entirely.

Project Objectives

- To conduct over 350 standardized interviews with fishers in the Bahamas who have had in-water shark encounters or experiences whilst fishing. - After data analysis the interviewer and other specialized team members will revisit fishers to speak one-on-one or in small groups, on good fishing practices, science and safety. - Lastly, Saving the Blue will gift all water users some essential safety items. Saving the Blue believe by equipping themselves with a diverse team who bring different skills to the project, they can influence the safety of those sharing space with sharks in The Bahamas.
