SUBMERSIBLES: TRITON SUBMARINES

What factors have contributed to the increasing profile and popularity of submers - ibles in recent years? The confluence of several factors has contributed to the booming interest in the submers - ible sector. Firstly, I think over 15-years of development has resulted in a mature product that people are confident in. Secondly, social currency has changed in recent years from the materialistic to experiential, so rather than investing in ‘objects’ people now invest in unique meaningful experiences. This can be seen in the changing use of yachts, from status symbols to genuine platforms for adventure and discovery. As yacht use has changed, so has their design, in order to accommodate more onboard assets for exploration when visiting remote regions – like tenders, helicopters, submersibles, etc. So, I guess the short answer is, people now place high value in the opportunity to share extraordinary experiences with family and friends, and what more unique vehicle to achieve that with than with a submersible?

What are your bestselling models and how many have you sold?

Our best-selling model is the Triton 3300/3 MKII of which we have now delivered ten units and is the most successful series-built submersible in history, in terms of both sales and achievements. Carrying three persons to depths of up to 1,000m it is the submersible of choice for adventurers, marine researchers, documentary producers and underwater archae- ologists. Anyone who has watched the BBC’s Blue Planet, Galapagos or David Attenborough Great Barrier Reef series will be familiar with it. It also recently featured in Will Smith’s Wel- come to Earth. The extraordinary capability, reliability and payload of this model makes it a true workhorse that can be fitted out with a remarkable array of additional equipment in order to undertake a wide variety of deep ocean missions.

Any new models coming up?

We always have a number of concepts and models under development as part of our ongo- ing program as part of our commitment to progress how people will experience and engage with the deep ocean for generations to come. Our latest is a collaboration with Espen Oeino International and Dark Ocean Design called Project Hercules. It is a high-performance luxury submersible that will deliver an experience that is best likened to that of a private jet.
