Fierce Protectors of the Injured

JUST ANOTHER DAY FOR HER, A MIRACLE FOR ME A Tribute to My Hardworking Mother and Grandmother

After this insane year that we’ve all been going through, the Thanksgiving season has given me a lot to think about. Lately, I’m increasingly grateful for the family members in my life who always made the holidays special despite how little we had, especially my mother and grandmother. For the first five (and most formative years of my life), I was raised in large part by my mother, Theresa, and maternal Polish grandmother, “Busia.” My biological father had abandoned us before my birth, leaving us without financial support to fend for ourselves. My mom, Busia, and Aunt Lory, only a teenager at the time, took it upon themselves to make sure I was properly raised to respect others. They taught me by example what real love and hard discipline were. They helped me understand what it meant to always do the right thing and how to use our Christian faith as a guide. Yes, I was raised by women, and I am glad I was!

We were very poor, but I honestly never knew it. They kept me busy with what was most important in life! During those years, they influenced me most, and their positive upbringing has continued from birth to the present day, even after their deaths. My mom remarried, and my new dad, Richard Sevenish, adopted me when I was 5 years old. From there, like clockwork it seemed, my mom and dad kept on having children one after the other, but I was never lost in the shuffle and would never trade those chaotic years as our family grew to nine kids. Now, I’ll never forget how my parents and nine kids shared a single bathroom in a small house in Rossford, Ohio. But we were family, and that is just the way it was — what great life lessons we learned. In many ways, my work ethic is inspired largely by my mom. We would go to school all day, then I would have sports obligations year-round, but I could never quite figure out how my mom was able to take care of all of us in the morning before school — before she got herself ready to leave for an office job. She would work all day only to return home, kick off her high heels, and immediately begin dinner while cleaning the house and simply handing her paycheck over to my dad. “ I’m sure my mom thought she was simply going about her day - to - day life as best she could, but to the rest of us, her grace in doing so was life - changing. ”

She was quite an unbelievable “warrior” woman and loving parent, wife, and defender of her kids for sure. Fortunately for her, she had nine assistants to help, but given the disparity of ages, some of us had to step up more than others until the crop (us!) grew and thinned out over time. Thank you, Mom and Busia, for all you did to set a foundation for me to love and to serve others just like the both of you. And to all of the fierce warrior caretakers and protectors out there, don’t forget: You’ve already made 2020 great, no matter how challenging it was. I’m sure my mom thought she was simply going about her day-to-day life as best she could, but to the rest of us, her grace in doing so was life-changing.

Have a beautiful Thanksgiving, everyone.

IS YOUR CHILD INTERESTED IN MOTORCYCLING?

TOP 5 HEALTHY LIFE HACKS To Have an Awesome Morning Getting your day started with coffee isn't always enough. Sometimes, you need to give yourself an extra boost, especially when you have little energy or trouble focusing. For an awesome start to your day, here are five tips to get you going right off the bat. WAKE UP 5 MINUTES EARLY. What’s the power of five minutes? It can be more than you think. Spend this time doing simple breathing exercises or a quick meditation so you can get focused for the rest of the day. If that’s not your style, you can prepare a quick to-do list for your day ahead. Either way, it’s always nice to have a little extra time for yourself without losing too much sleep. START WITH GREEN TEA, THEN COFFEE. A cup of coffee at 7 a.m. can leave you burned out by 10 a.m. Try swapping it with green tea for a more gentle wake-up call. After that, you can brew your favorite coffee to keep you going strong. This practice also might help you consume less caffeine overall! TAKE A QUICK MORNING WALK — AND HAVE YOUR MEETINGS ON THE GO. Morning meetings can make us want to fall asleep again. Don’t spend all of them sitting down if you don’t have to! Not only will morning walks help you wake up, but they can also add some extra physical activity to your day. WRITE IN YOUR JOURNAL. Who says you have to journal at the end of the day when you’re tired and ready to sleep? You can journal in the morning about what happened yesterday and the things you’re looking forward to that day. Journaling can remind you of your daily goals and motivate you to stick to your commitments. PACK YOUR LUNCH (OR SNACKS!). Staying on track with your goals starts with having the energy to do them. Plan a healthy balance of fats, vegetables, carbohydrates, and proteins. This can be as simple as assembling dips, carrots, wraps, and salads each morning.

Here’s the Safest Way for Them to Learn

Don’t wait until your child hops on the back of someone’s bike at a party — if they are really serious about learning how to ride a motorcycle and you’re worried about their safety, there’s no better way to learn than professional lessons. And, with the Ride Safe Indiana (RSI) program, you can get free motorcycling courses with motorcycles provided for students. The RSI’s Entry Level Motorcycle Safety Course is specifically designed for beginning riders of all ages, and the curriculum meets the standards established by the BMV. Students will spend 5 hours of classroom instruction to prepare for 10 hours of practical riding exercises in a controlled, off-street environment. Motorcycles are provided 100% free to students during the course.

There’s also a lot more to motorcycle safety than learning basic navigation. Instructors will also teach students about:

Types of motorcycles

Layout and operation of the basic controls

• Types of safety gear worn for protection and comfort

• How alcohol and other drugs impair a rider's ability

Once students are familiar with these things, they’ll be able to start off with straight-line riding, stopping, shifting, and turning. Students will eventually progress to swerving and emergency braking. At the end of the course, there’s a written exam and a riding-skill evaluation to determine how ready students are for the BMV test. However, if students would like to learn more, there’s also an advanced learning course they can take. Aside from education on how their bike works and the proper riding gear, there’s one more thing that no rider should start biking on the road without. At Sevenish Law Firm — as the official firm of the Lawyer Who Rides™ — we can’t fully convey the importance of having proper motorcycling insurance coverage. If you ever have questions about the right coverage for you, give us a call. All new riders should be informed about how having good insurance can protect you, your family, and your future.

It’s time to try these tactics to jump-start your day!

CAN GRATITUDE HELP YOU LIVE LONGER? The Science Behind Counting Your Blessings

There are few things more impacting in our lives than learning how to be thankful. The “good days” are famously never realized when we’re having them, but rather, long after they’re gone. But why do we have to wait to reflect and feel gratitude for our experiences? Tomorrow is promised to nobody — we only have the current moment for certain. That’s a pretty good reason to be thankful. And, as it turns out, science has a few reasons, too. Research shows that by spending 5 minutes journaling each day about what you’re grateful for, you can increase your long-term happiness. When positive events happen in our lives, it’s easy to feel gratitude and appreciation for the moment, but that feeling isn’t exclusive to that moment. We can try to access it at any time, which research also shows can increase our self-esteem. For these reasons, it’s no surprise to hear that gratitude can significantly decrease depressive symptoms. While that alone can help patients

increase their lifespan, patients with hypertension — which is often referred to as the “silent killer” of conditions — can also experience a significant decrease in their blood pressure from practicing gratitude writing. This leads to improved sleep and overall enhanced well-being, since decreasing your blood pressure can even make huge strides to avoid chronic heart diseases. It might even motivate you to exercise more! Don’t just take our word for it, though. Science tells us that grateful people are healthy people. The more grateful you are, the more likely you are to enjoy better physical health and psychological health. If you’re having trouble sticking to your health-related New Year’s resolutions, maybe it’s time to add gratitude to your list. Although this year has been more difficult and challenging than usual for many of us, that might make gratitude all the more important to practice.

Woman Sues Starbucks Over ‘ Too Much Ice’

Sometimes, there is such a thing as “too much ice.” You’re sipping your cold beverage when suddenly, it’s gone far quicker than you expected. All you’re left with is a cup full of ice. It’s disappointing, for sure, but is it so disappointing that you would want to file a lawsuit against the company that supplied the beverage? That’s exactly what Stacy Pincus did in 2016. She ordered an iced coffee from Starbucks, only to find “too much ice” in her drink. The lawsuit, filed in Chicago, alleged that the drink was advertised as a 24-ounce beverage, but once the ice was factored in, Pincus and her lawyers claimed the drink was really only “14 fluid ounces.” “Starbucks’ advertising practices are clearly meant to mislead consumers when combined with the standard practice of filling a cold drink cup with far less liquid than the cup can hold,” the suit claimed. NBC News reported that Pincus sought damages to the tune of $5 million against the coffee chain.

“The plaintiff would not have paid as much,” her lawyers stated in a court document, “if anything, for the cold drinks had she known that they contained less, and in many cases, nearly half as many, fluid ounces than claimed by Starbucks. As a result, the plaintiff suffered injury in fact and lost money or property." Starbucks’ response: “Our customers understand and expect that ice is an essential component of any 'iced' beverage. If a customer is not satisfied with their beverage preparation, we will gladly remake it.” The company also reaffirmed that you can order any iced beverage with “light ice” and receive half the ice normally included. Interestingly, a second lawsuit against Starbucks popped up in Los Angeles a few months later, but both cases were thrown out. Pincus never saw a cent of that $5 million, nor did she recoup her attorneys’ fees. The case went on to be called “one of the most frivolous lawsuits of 2016.”
