© j 1 T jjK sm i I IT I T 1 Q U E by Betty Bruechert asked by readers, “ Is the Church of God a cult?” and we reply, “ It depends upon which particular group you mean.” For Frank S. Mead, in his Handbook of Denominations in the United States, writes: “At least 200 independent religious bodies in the United States bear the name ‘Church of God’ in one form or another.” There is a wide range of belief in these sects, from Pentecostal and Holiness teach ing to Unitarian, anti-Trinitarian views; from regeneration by the Holy Spirit as held by evangelicals to baptismal regeneration; from lit eral hell and heaven to no-hell, soul- sleeping a n d paradise on earth. There are many varieties o f doc trines of the return of Christ. An examination of the creeds o f most of these groups indicates that the three systems which have influenced the “ Church of God” most are the Pente costal, Seventh-day Adventist and Jehovah’s Witnesses. These differ widely from each other. Another group calling itself “ The Church of God,” with world head quarters at Queens Village, N.Y. publishes a 4-page newspaper now complete with candidates for U.S. president and vice-president, run ning on the Theocratic Party ticket, and promising a paradise here on earth; its twelve-point platform in- THE KING'S BUSINESS THE CHURCH(ES) OF GOD W E h a v e b e e n
