SMETHWICK FOODBANK Abbey is supporting Smethwick Foodbank as part of our Harvest Festival. Smethwick Foodbank have written to share information and express their gratitude for our help. Dear parents, carers and children of Abbey - Thank you! Smethwick Foodbank provides food to local people in crisis. We opened in 2012 and are based at Holy Trinity Church in Smethwick. 1 in 5 of the population live below the poverty line. Last year 42 people volunteered their time to help behind-the- scenes, doing roles such as greeting people who come to the Foodbank or working in our warehouse putting food donations onto shelves and picking food for parcels. We help individuals and families of all sizes, and last year gave out over 52,000 meals - that works out at 1,000 meals a week! Each year we receive food donations, weighing the equivalent of three double-decker buses (45 tonnes), from generous local people. This Harvest you can help by donating an item or two from our shopping list to ensure we can provide food to people in crisis. Our top ten items are: tinned vegetables, tinned meat/fish, tinned meals, pasta sauce, rice, pasta, tinned fruit, custard, rice pudding, orange juice. All items should be unopened, in date and in good condition. We are forbidden by law to give away food that has passed its 'best before' date. We have no storage facilities for fresh food, so if you collect fresh food we would prefer you to arrange for it to go elsewhere. We also take non-food items such as toiletries and cleaning products, as these are just as essential to the clients who come to us. If you need more information about the foodbank, our website www.smethwick.foodbank.org.uk may be useful. Thank you so very much - just one tin will make a difference.
