The purpose of my project is not only to expand my design and sewing techniques but also to bring to life how I view death. Throughout my life death has become almost a physical being. This look from my line of four designs works to show how ethereal I view death. The process I used was researching what I wanted to explore in design and that led me to pleating. The pleating in this look came from the Madam Grés technique in which one sculpts the fabric around the body. This look connected back to my view of death through the song In a Week by Hozier. While I am inspired by the Madam Grés technique, I did not use that technique in the draping of the pleats. After taking my models measurements, I draped the garment on the bias and used flat patterning on the gloves. Once my patterns were completed, I made a sample and had a fitting. The use of a bias cut created very form flattering asymmetrical pleats. The materials used were polyester and nylon blend fiber satin weave fabrics. I used an invisible zipper and fabric covered buttons for closures. This is one of four designs for my spring collection. My collection can be seen at the 30th Annual CWU Fashion Show brought to you by the Apparel, Textiles & Merchandising program in conjunction with the Theatre Department on June 6th at 3pm and 7pm in Milo Smith Theatre. This design was inspired by my love for 1960’s style, miniatures, and doll fashion. Growing up, I played with dolls passed down to me from my grandmother and great aunt. I would admire the clothing, wondering why the fashions I saw in real life lacked fun details and color. With this collection I desire to invite others to step inside a doll house to experience a world of joy, whimsy, and fun. To start I created a mood board, sketched out different babydoll dress designs, decided, took my models measurements, draped the dress bodice and skirt, flat patterned the sleeves and bow, made pattern adjustments, sewed a sample, had a fitting with my model, made adjustments to my sample, and sewed the final garment in my dress fabric. I gathered flare sleeves and made matching covered buttons. For textiles I used a powder blue fabric 100% polyester satin weave for the front bow, covered buttons, and bodice lining. I also used a white polka dot 60% polyester, 30% nylon, and 10% spandex rachelle knit lace for the sleeves and overlay. This is one of three designs for my spring collection.
