PEEKABOO Angel Frias Solorio Project Mentor(s): Andrea Eklund
This design sheds light on how one’s personality is hidden but when shown it can be captivating. The backless dress with pearl beading is showing vulnerability; the layered stockings adds pops of color for layers. The tutu is lifted, giving you that peekaboo into what builds a person. I was inspired by birds like swans and white peacocks. Standing proud without letting the stares from how crazy they might look to others. They know they are beautiful no matter what the norm is, they aren't afraid to stand out. I sketched out a look from inspiration and edited to fit my collection where the legs stand out. I then took measurements and flat patterned the skirt and tutu. After draping the base of the garment, I hand-beaded the back piece to complete the design. Throughout the garment, construction consists of gathering and classic tutu techniques with multiple layers. Using hand sewing techniques to Frankenstein into a new pair of tights & thread beading. I used a sturdy white cotton twill fabric for the dress, pearl beads for the back, and two types of tulle made from nylon and polyester. The tights were cut then sewn together; this is one of three designs for my spring collection. My collection can be seen at the 30th Annual CWU Fashion Show brought to you by the Apparel, Textiles & Merchandising program in conjunction with the Theatre Department on June 6th at 3pm and 7pm in Milo Smith Theatre. The halter top was draped in three sections – center front, center back, and upper back – with a horizontally split back design that contrasts delicate lace with repurposed jersey material. Half-inch pleats were carefully engineered by measuring, drafting, and manipulating pattern pieces with added strip applications to achieve precise structure and texture. The pants were developed from a sloper drafted to the model’s measurements, then transformed using slash-and-spread techniques to create volume and incorporate a split-panel design. Pattern pieces were finalized with added seam allowances before construction. Due to the combination of materials, seam finishes were thoughtfully selected, utilizing French seams for the lace and serging for the denim to ensure both durability and refinement. Jersey remnants were further repurposed into fabric strips, forming dimensional bow details that enhance the overall design.
