OA Endowment Fund

Activity in 2011 Six young OAs were receiving assistance in connection with their further education, and 20 pupils received cash contributions towards the cost of educational trips from money provided to The Master’s Fund. Total loans and grants amounted to £16,570, compared with £10,810 the previous year. The trustees have to maintain a delicate balance between advertising the Fund’s existence and occasioning an unmanageable volume of demand, but in the summer they felt sufficiently confident to undertake a new initiative, which consisted of sending a letter to all OAs who, according to the College’s records, were likely to be graduating from university at that time. For several years the Secretary has addressed College leavers about the Fund in their final term. Dr Wilkinson The Secretary was notified towards the end of 2010 that Dr AE Wilkinson (29-32), who had served in the Second World War as a major in the Royal Army Medical Corps before going to live in Bolivia, had left £25,000 to the Endowment Fund. Research has revealed that Dr Wilkinson was one of the Fund’s earliest beneficiaries, receiving an annual grant towards his medical school fees of £25!

Aims Established in 1932, the Fund provides financial assistance to OAs and pupils for their education or training for an occupation or profession. Assistance is almost always given in the form of an interest- free loan, to be repaid when the beneficiary’s financial situation allows, often in instalments. Help may exceptionally be given as an outright grant. Additionally, the trustees may transfer annually up to 5% of liquid or invested assets to The Master’s Fund for disbursement to current pupils in connection with one-off extra-curricular activities. Trustees The Fund is administered by six trustees, who in 2011 were: IW Warburton (Chairman); JR Walters (Hon Secretary); KR Chaundy (Hon Treasurer); WLS Keat; T Llewelyn; and BA Noble. The Master is invited to attend trustee meetings. As required by the Fund’s trust deed, the Secretary and Treasurer stepped down at the end of 2011 having completed seven consecutive years in office. The appointments of Marcus (MRA) Graham (90- 98) as Secretary and Nick (NR) Rundle (69-76) as Treasurer were ratified at the 2011 Alleyn Club AGM. David Trace has expressed the wish to retire from the position of Independent Examiner. The trustees would like to record their thanks for his valuable contribution and would like to hear from professionally qualified OAs interested in filling this role.
