D o I have to take a nap?”

“Yes, if you want to go to church

tonight.”

“ I don’t.” “ Remember, no church if you don’t nap.” Ardyth played all Sunday after noon. At 6 P.M. she told Daddy she wanted to nap. “Not now. It’s too late. Mother has your supper ready.” At the table the little miss gave us the silent treatment. She picked at her food and refused to answer any ques tions addressed to her. Mother bathed and readied her for bed, then allowed her to sit in a chair with her Bible story book. As Mother dressed for service she notice Ardyth had closed the book and was staring disconsolate ly into space. Speaking now, as if only to herself, she said: “ I guest I’ve really messed up this day.” Then she wept. The tears were from frustration. As the two knelt to pray before Ardyth was tucked into bed, Mother asked her little one how she concluded that she had “messed up her day.” With an obvious air of futility she replied: “ I really wanted to go to church tonight. I just thought I could take a tiny rest, and Daddy would think I had taken a long nap. Then when he was getting ready to go to the study I’d tell him I took a nap so it would be all right for me to go to church, wouldn’t it? In his hurry to get to the study he’d say, ‘I guess so.’ But he didn’t say that. I’ll never do it again Mommie. I’m so sorry.” More tears—this time joined by Mother’s. Prayers of confession and a few more words of admonition from Mother, and the little girl closed her eyes in sleep. If our blessed Lord tarries, we.face a new year of frightening and challeng ing potential. What will our works reveal of our hearts’ motivation? W ill Jesus Christ or scheming self-will direct our course? May it be that we shall walk in the path He has laid out for us, hearing the voice of our Lord saying: “ I will instruct thee and teach thee in the way which thou shalt go: I will guide thee with mine eye (upon thee)” (Ps. 32:8).
