Jesus is th e though t of God, the ex pression of God’s though t tow ard men. (Heb. 1:3.) “ W ho being: th e b rig h tn e s s o f h is g lo ry , a n d th e e x p re ss im a g e o f h is p e rso n , a n d u p h o ld in g a ll th in g s b y th e w o rd o f h is p o w e r, w h e n h e h a d b y h im se ft p u rg e d o n r sin s, s a t d o w n o n th e r ig h t h a n d o f th e U fajesty on. h ig h ;” He in terp rets to us all of th e thoughts of God. He is God’s representative. He was God, manifest in hum án form. When people, saw Him, th ey saw God; when they heard His voice, they heard God speak. He was w ith God and God was w ith Him and th is was manifested by His m iracles, by His teaching and by His a ttitu d e tow ard men. Let your though t go back to Adam; beyond th a t to creation; beyond th a t to th e ages before creation. He was there. When was He? In the begin ning. Where was H e?‘ In th e begin ning. W hat was He? He was God. Everything has a beginning bu t God. (Isa. 43:10.) “T e a r e m y w itn e s se s , s a ltb th e L ord, a n d m y s e rv a n t w h om I h a v e ch o sen ; t h a t y e m a y k n o w a n d b eliev e m e, a n d u n d e rs ta n d t h a t I a m h e ; b e fo re m e th e re w a s h o God fo rm ed , n e ith e r sh a ll th e re b e a f te r m e.” In existence He is eternal; in natu re He is divine; in person incomparable. A ray of sunshine proceeds from the sun, yet it co-exists w ith the sun. So Christ proceeds from the F ath e r, yet co-exists w ith the F ather. Outline of Chapter: (1) The In carnate Word, vs. 1-18. (2) The Testimony of th e W itness to th e Word, vs. 19-34. (3) Finding 1 and Following the Word, vs. 35-51. ' To attem p t to use th is whole chap te r in a single vlesson is a seemingly impossible task, and yet it will be pos sible to bring the pupils face to face -with th e fact th a t Jesus, God’s Son, is the center of all of God’s thought, and th a t th is Gospel of John is one con tinuous picture of Jesus as He moves along du ring the th ree years of His m inistry, displaying th e words He spoke and th e work He w rought. Let this fact be impressed in th is lesson from th is book. (1 ) THE INCARNATE WORD OF GOD. (a) The Word and God, vs. 1, 2, “ In the beginning was th e Word.” Here we have th e relation of Jesus to God. The title used is word (in the original, Logos, “ a word.” ) A word is always used to express a thought. H ere it is used to express th e person of Christ. When you use th e word “m other,” it carries w ith it a m ulti tude of though ts w ith pictures and memories dear to you.. So here “Word” is to bring to our memory a hundred precious things concerning Jesus Christ as both Savior and Lord.
