In this space print the word, “ PSALMS.” Open the folds and using the letters in this word, complete the following words: “ PILGRIMS SANG PSALMS T R A V E L I N G M A N Y MILES.” ) Lesson: When we travel, we take a suitcase such as this in which to carry our necessary clothing. We do not know exactly how the travelers in Bible times carried their clothes, but we know that they carried something more important than clothes, and this they carried in their hearts. I refer to God’s Word, and particularly to the Psalms. The ancient Jewish pilgrims considered Psalms 120 to 134 as their travel Psalms, and as they marched in groups up to Jerusalem to the feasts, they could be heard sing ing these Psalms. We have the word “ PSALMS” printed on this piece of paper. We will open it and see what we find on the inside. We read, “ PILGRIMS SANG PSALMS, TRAVELING MANY MILES:”

Objects: A hymnbook and a piece of paper' 8% x ll inches, or larger if visibil ity requires. (Fold each end to within % inch of the middle, leaving a gap of Yz inch. In this space print the word, “ PSALMS.” Open the folds and using the letters in this word, complete the following words “ INSPIRED, SONGS, PROCLAIMING, LORD’S, MERCIFUL, BLESSINGS.” Begin the lesson with the flaps folded in front, showing only the word, “ PSALMS.” )

Lesson: Did you ever stop to think that the people of the Bible did not have hymnbooks, from which to sing, such as the one you see in my hand? They had a better hymnbook—they used the book of Psalms. Here is a piece of paper on 'which the word “ PSALMS” is printed. If we open this paper we shall see how the Psalms were used by the people of God in Bible times. We read, “INSPIRED SONGS, PRO CLAIMING LORD’S M E R C I F U L BLESSINGS.” Is it any wonder that the people used the Psalms, when they real ized that they helped them remember and proclaim the Lord’s blessings? The 67th Psalm was one frequently used. It speaks of God’s mercy and bless ings. We read, “ God be merciful unto us, and bless us; and cause his face to shine upon us” (v. 1). In the 4th verse we read, “ O let the nations be glad and sing for joy: for thou shalt judge the people righteously, and govern the na tions upon earth.” Not only does the Psalm suggest truths for the people of Israel, but you will notice that the na tions were invited to “be glad and sing for joy.” In verses 6 and 7 we find the result of singing praises to our merciful God, “ Then shall the earth yield her increase; and God, even our own God, shall bless us. God shall bless us; and all the ends of the earth shall fear him.” God is still pleased when His people memorize the Psalms and recite them as a means of giving praise to Him.

One of the reasons for their singing is found in Psalm 122:1, “ I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the Lord.” They were happy at the thought of going to worship at Jerusalem; and why shouldn’t they be? Not only did they sing on the way to Jerusalem, but they sang as they went up the temple steps. I should not be sur prised if the 134th Psalm was used at this time. “ Behold, bless ye the Lord, all ye servants of the Lord, which by night stand in the house of the Lord. Lift up your hands in the sanctuary, and bless the Lord. The Lord that made heaven and earth bless thee out of Zion.” There would be more happy travelers, and more blessing of the Lord on trav elers, if more people made the Word of God a living companion as they travel through life.
