the salvation that He can give and have brought them to Him. If you truly are born again you will want to spend much time talking with your Lord in prayer and listening to Him talk to you through His Word, the Bible, and through His servants, minis ters, missionaries, Sunday school teach ers, Christian parents, etc. The better you learn to know Him, the more you will be prayerfully watching for oppor tunities to tell others I “have found the Christ.”

The Lord always has a work for His followers to do. He saves men that they may serve Him. Today’s lesson records the call to service of Peter, James and John. This was not their first call. That is recorded in John 1:35-42 and was considered in last week’s lesson. Here we have their definite call to Christian service prior to their call to the apostle- ship. God first calls men to salvation, then to service. This is always His or der. Service can never take the place of salvation. God will not tolerate a sub stitution at this point. The Occasion of the Call vv. 1-3 The description here is so true to the geography of Galilee that it must have been written by one who.was well ac quainted with the facts. In characteris tic fashion, a large crowd pressed or thronged about Jesus to “hear the word of God” (1). In order that He might better be heard by the multitude, Jesus boarded a boat that belonged to Peter, pushed out a little from the land, sat down in the boat and taught the peo ple (2, 3). Thus with the boat as a pulpit, the water as a sounding board, and the sloping shore as the auditorium for His congregation, Jesus performed His ministry just prior to the incident that forms the basis for the main part of today’s lesson. Preparation For the Call vv. 4, 5 The Lord often takes the circum stances in which men find themselves and transforms them into spiritual blessing. The three disciples had expe rienced a fruitless night of fishing (5a), yet the Lord commanded them to “ Launch out into the deep” for a draught (4). Christ is Lord of circum stances and nature and can make both bend to man’s blessing. Peter demon strated a commendable attitude when he responded in face of his futile ex perience of the previous night, “ At thy word I will let down the net” (5b). It is always wise to obey Jesus even though such obedience may seem utterly ir rational. Obedience to Jesus’ command on the part of Peter, James and John

M CHRISTMAS is answer to Israel'

ers and yearnings for a Saviour CHRISTMAS is the God-promised child, the desire o f all nations, nestled in the arms o f a Jewish Virgin in Beth lehem o f Judea, the promises and prophecies, the very love o f God become flesh.

CHRISTMAS is the season when the Babe o f Bethlehem is flooding our hearts with a warm glow, urging us on to share His salvation and blessings with those around us. ^ It is in the spirit o f Israel’s Messiah, the Light o f the World, that THE FRIENDS OF ISRAEL ministers all year round to the earthly people o f our Saviour, the Jews. ^ Where there is hunger, homelessness, heartache, the crushing burden o f distress and fear, or a groping in the dark for the Light o f God, there is our field— in Israel, Germany, Franee, Belgium, England, and across the American Continent. ■Jr The word o f God is preached, broadcast, and distributed in many languages by dedicated missionaries. The distressed and weary Hebrew Christians, their little children, and the orphans, are comforted and pro vided for in His name. •Jr Will you celebrate the birth o f our Saviour in the most fitting way, by helping us to show forth His love to His brethren? Send your Birthday gift for your Lord -to _________ ^ ___________________________________ _____________ _ 728 K Witherspoon Building, Philadelphia 7, Pa, Treasurer,Canada— Rev.
