D A ILY Devotional Readings A MESSAGE FOR EVERY DAY OF THE MONTH

JULY 1 Spirit-Filled Workmen

their eyes received sight.” But the narrative does not stop there. After the word “ sight” there is no period, but only a comma. What then? “ And they followed him” (Matt. 20: 34). . . . Sight, or light, is given to us from God that we may follow. — The Sunday School Times. JULY 5 A True Test "Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world” (1 John 4:1). I remember a story which runs thus: T o a saint who was praying the evil spirit showed himself radiant with royal robes, and crowned with a jewelled diadem, and said, “ I am Christ— I am descending on the earth— and I desire first to manifest myself to thee.” The saint kept silence and looked on the apparition, and then said, “ I will not believe that Christ is come to me save in that state and form in which He suffered; He must wear the marks of the wounds and the cross.” The false apparition vanished. . . . Many false spirits are abroad; more are issuing from the pit: the credentials which they display are the precious gifts of mind, beauty, richness, depth, originality. Christian, with the saint, look hard at them in silence, and ask them for the print of the nails. — S. H owson . JULY 6 Respecting Others “In lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves" (Phil. 2:3). Instead of asserting our own superiority and demanding respect, reverence, submis sion, and service from others, we are in a sense to forget ourselves, and think how we can minister to them. W e are not here to be waited upon, honored, and served. In the world men regard greatness as ruling over others, exercising authority, receiving reverence and submission. But we are to look upon every other person as one to whom we may render some service. Those who study our Lord’s life carefully will be struck with what we might call His rever ence for humanity. He never despised any human being.—J. R. M iller . JULY 7 By What Standard? “ Through thy precepts I get understand ing: therefore I hate every false way" (Psa. 119:104). Christians call the Bible the only rule of faith and practice; but is it the only rule of practice? Do we take this Bible when any question of doubtful propriety comes up, and ask ourselves what the Bible says on that subject? Do we make the Bible the standard of our life? Do we take the Bible when difficulties arise, and say, “ How does . . . Christ’s teaching bear upon this?” Nay; we are more apt to be governed by what people will say, by what they will do. —F rancis L. P atton .

"And he hath filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of work manship” ( Ex. 35:31). It is refreshing to come upon the story of a man who was filled with the Spirit so that he might be a good workman . . . W e err fundamentally when we make a dis tinction between intellectual and industrial life, or between sacred and secular employ ment, or when we limit inspiration to the poet, philosopher, artist, but deny it to the merchant, engineer, carpenter, housekeeper, nurse., A man may equally hold his title from Almighty God to follow the plough or to rule a kingdom. The carpenter’s shop at Nazareth sheds the glory of Christ across our common life.—J ohn M ac B eath . JULY 2 An Attitude o f Faith " I f we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit" (Gal. 5:25). Remember, we stand as Paul stood, mid way between two eternities. W e are chil dren o f the past, it is true, but we are the parents of the future. Yesterday is behind our backs, full of the mercy of God. T o morrow is in our own hands; its issues are self-determined; its quality is according to our attitude of faith in the living God. t —H. W . W ebb -P eploe . JULY 3 Lifted Loads "Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows” (Isa. 53:4). I wonder if He .really shares In all my little human cares— This mighty K ing of kings! If He who guides through boundless space Each blazing planet in its place Can have the condescending grace T o mind these petty things. It seems to me, if sure of this,' Blent with each evil would come such bliss That I might covet pain; And deem whatever brought to me The loving throb of Deity And sense of Christ’s sweet sympathy Not loss, but richest gain. — S elected . JULY 4 Immediate Obedience "Whatsoever he saith unto you, do i t ’ (John 2:5). Tw o blind men once cried out to the Lord Jesus to have mercy on them. They could not be silenced, although men rebuked them. The Lord heard their cry, called them to Him, and said, “What will ye that I shall do unto you ?” There came the pleading prayer: “ Lord, that our eyes may be opened.” His heart o f compassion went out to them, He touched their eyes, “ and immediately
