In this, the blinding daylight of my faith, I need not see beyond the ceiling-blue; I know the stars are shining as at night, For I believe the vows of God are true. I know a host of angels hover by, And cleave the air like light to answer prayer; That this dark glass will exercise my. sight, And more and more reveal the Saviour there. — G ene F arrell . "1 am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly" (John 10:10). The deepest cry of the human heart is the cry for God—for the living God. Sooner or later we come to know that nothing less can really satisfy or truly bless. With St. Augustine we say, “ Thou hast made us for Thyself, and our hearts are disquieted till we find rest in TheeJ’ It is God Himself that we want, His presence and His love. Man’s true life, his highest, his spirit-life, depends on fellowship with God. This is the life that Jesus gives. He made known to us the Father.—E dna V. J ackson . Beloved, you heard His summons, But, o h ! it was hard to yield— Just to lie restfully idle While others were in your field; But soon came the glad assurance, “M y Father knows what is best” ; Then a calm hush o’er the spirit, The joy of a heart at rest. JULY 31 One Object o f Devotion "If any man serve me, him will my father honor” (John 12:26). Oh! how the heart rejects honor, in any shape, from that world which rejected and crucified our blessed Lord, when the only object is to serve Him. W e cannot receive honor, much less can we seek it from one another, when under the power of His constraining love we seek to serve Him. Otherwise it is self-service in a subtle form. But it is His love, known and en joyed, that alone can deliver us from self ishness of this most horrid kind, self-seek ing, self-serving, self-honoring, even in the very things that outwardly appear to be service to Him.—J. G. D eck . New Hymn-Anthem “ Heralds of Grace” is a beautiful musical selection, arranged in four units, for choir use. The message of Christ’s resurrection and the glory of His resurrected life im parted to the believer are set forth in words by Clarence E. Ranck with harmony by Herbert G. Tovey. The selection is appro priate for any Lord’s Day. Copies of these four-page song sheets ^ "x lO ") may be obtained from the publishers, Oriental Mis sionary Society, 900 N. abound in love.” The “increase” has to do with their inner life, their hearts being more and more enlarged in capacity to pos sess this love. The “ abounding” points to the overflow of that love toward others. —W . H. G riffith T homas . JULY 26 Who Is Usable? “For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called” (1 Cor. 1:26). Perhaps you have said there is not much you can do for Christ, or for the coming of His kingdom. You have no outstanding gift to exercise, no personality that imme diately impresses, nothing to mark you off from the common ruck. My friend, you are just the man or woman Christ wants. He wants plain, ordinary people, people who are willing to let Him use them, w ill ing to pull together in the cause 'for which He stands. A movement is not made up of a few brilliant individualists. It is made up of the large numbers of ordinary people who join it and who throw themselves into it with very little more, it may be, than their enthusiasm and their wholeheartedness. — D. P. T homson . JULY 27 Practical Power “Much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life” (Rom. 5:10). Redemption is not a legal fiction, but a divine anticipation. God regards you as justified because He knows He can make you just; He accepts you as sanctified, be cause He knows He can make you holy; and redemption has liberated His power to do it. But if redemption has liberated His power to do it, then you have the right to expect that power shall be exercised; and according to your faith so it shall be unto you.—M. H ay A itken . JULY 28 Light in Darkness “He discovereth deep things out of dark ness, and bringeth out to light the shadow of death’1 : (Job 12:22). The things which give us most evidence of God are just the dark things of life; this was the experience of the man who, of all others, knew most of life’s dark things. And what Job learned by his sor row we are all learning—that the cross is our crown, that the rejected stone is the head of the corner. Thou art seeking light on the life beyond the grave— light that shall dispel the gloom of death, turn back its shadow. But it does not occur to thee that the shadow of death is itself to be the light that thou seekest. . . . My soul, do not despise the shadows of life. Do not say that they are exceptions to the proof of divine intelligence; do not exclaim when they are passing over thee that thy way is hid from the Lord. These shadows are sent to thee, not as hidings, but as revela tions of the face of G od; they come to thee as messengers of light.— G eorge M atheson . JULY 29 Unseeil, But Real "Faith is . . . the evidence of things not seen" (Heb. 11:1).

Christ; the meekness, and gentleness, and patience of Christ; the holy obedience and love for the will of God of His own blessed Son? I may talk about the joy of being like Christ when He comes. It is mere empty talk unless I am seeking to be like Him now. Why need I talk of the joy of being with Him if I do not give Him five minutes of my company throughout the day?— J ohn R. C aldwell . JULY 25 Overflowing Love “ The Lord make, you to increase and abound in love one toward another” (1 Thess. 3:12). Love in the New Testament is not mere sentiment, for it involves self-sacrifice. It is not limited to emotion; it expresses it self in energy. It does not evaporate in feeling; it expresses itself in fact. “ Love is of God,” for “ God is love” ; and the apostle in praying this prayer asks for the supreme gift of their lives. The measure of the gift is noticeable: “ Increase and I N S U R A N C E A LL LINES "Since 1900" MINES, MacKEIGAN & HILKER Pershing: Square Bldg. 448 S.
