PACK EXPO Reportedly Largest Ever

Show owner and producer PMMI, The Association for Packaging and Processing Technologies, reported that PACK EXPO International and Pharma EXPO 2016 was the largest show in the history of PACK EXPO. A record breaking 2,512 exhibitors spread over an 1.25 million net square feet of exhibit space welcomed more than 47,000 targeted buyers. One reportedly well-received new addition to PACK EXPO International’s long list of convenience-en- hancing features was the NextGEN Networking Fair, the event that connected both supplier companies and consumer goods manufacturers with student tal- ent in the Education and Workforce Development Pavilion. Fourteen teams of students from 10 partner schools also participated in the Amazing Packaging Race, sponsored by ASCO. A team made up of undergrads from Indiana State University, Cal Poly,Virginia Tech and Rutgers Univer- sity took home iPads for finishing first in the seventh annual competition.ASCO also awarded $5,000 acad- emic scholarships to Nathaniel Weger, a junior at the University of Iowa, and Quinnlan Sweeney, a junior at Clemson University.

Linerless Labels Market To Hit $2.32 Billion

The linerless labels market size is projected to grow from $1.82 billion in 2015 to $2.32 billion by 2020, at a CAGR of 4.87 percent from 2015 to 2020, ac- cording to a new report from MarketsandMarkets. The global linerless label market is driven by factors such as strong growth in the food & beverage packag- ing products, rising demand in consumer durables, lo- gistics, and pharmaceutical supply industries. The linerless labels market is witnessing demand owing to the rise in manufacturing activities. However, factors such as high capital investment, limited shapes of linerless labels, and rising raw material cost inhibit the growth of the market, according to the report. The food & beverage segment is projected to be the fastest-growing market at the highest CAGR in the next five years. The demand from the food & bev- erage sector is expected to experience a higher growth rate, mainly because of the growing demand for packaged and branded products, and consumer awareness toward the authenticity of the product. Inland Invests In Flexo Wash Technology Inland recently turned to Flexo Wash as it sought to improve its internal print processes while reducing unnecessary waste and downtime. Over the last year, Inland has invested in Flexo Wash technology for anilox cleaning, plate washing, and parts washing in multiple facilities. converting partners with this transition. Most recent- ly, Esko has released a solution that hopes to utilize its technology to, according to the company, “estab- lish a reliable workflow and simple approval and quality control capabilities, as well as nutritional facts table templates for easy placement into packaging artwork, which will enable rapid development of compliant packaging.” New Designs The proposed changes to the Nutrition Facts labels will include a new design that incorporates in- creased font sizes for items such as ‘Calories’, ‘Serv- ings Per Container’, and ‘Serving Size’.‘Added Sugars’ will be added along with how many grams and the percent of Daily Value. Serving sizes, which have been confusing or misleading for many years, will also be changed. Updating Information “The new regulations require food and beverage manufacturers to update all of their packaging art- work for product sold in the United States, which is a complex challenge due to the sheer volume of work and the need to ensure the layout of the label is ex- actly as described by the FDA,” said Philippe Adam, Vice President of Global Marketing at Esko. “Our unique solution allows manufacturers to establish a methodology and clear process for dealing with this challenge in a very simple way, as well as preparing manufacturers with an established workflow for fu- ture regulatory compliance of their packaging.” Esko has introduced three methods that can be im- plemented depending on the needs of each converter. The first method begins with the Brand Owner. Converters can create Nutritional Facts Tables (NFTs) from scratch by entering data into centralized tem- plates allowing for review and approval before being placed into final artwork. System Integration The second method begins with the artwork. An Esko plug-in for Adobe Illustrator allows converters to use their current artwork and connect it with the workflow, which provides NFT templates. The plug- in automatically centralizes the data so after new artwork for the Nutrition Facts Tables is reviewed and approved, future updates can be made quickly and easily. The third method is full system integration. If a con- verter has nutritional information available in a struc- tured fashion within other external systems, the

company can automate the data collection process required in creating or updating the NFTs.This elimi- nates manually entering the data, which is central- ized for future updates. “These regulations will ultimately provide more clarity for consumers, but transitions like these can be complex and disruptive,” said Adam.“We believe it is our job to help manufacturers transition to the new templates in a seamless manner, well in advance of the 2018 deadline.” Esko is hosting live webinars to explain and demon- strate the solution and three different methods, with recording of prior webinars already available.
