Let us adore and rej oice, as we con template the Trinity of Eternal Love. Behold th e. Father. . . . He is the; fountain of the whole redeeming w ork; blessing, choosing, accepting, working all things in the line of His ,own benignant will. Be hold the Son, the Blessed One. He gives Himself “ on earth abased,” to death, to shed the streaming blood of sacrifice, that we might have a redemption as secure as it is merciful, a “forgiveness of sins” quite as holy as it .is divinely generous. Look again, and behold the Spirit! He is the pledge o f a “glory which shall be re vealed in us,” before whose brightness not only “the sufferings .of this present time” but its experiences of gracjLwill so fade in the comparison that it will be as if they had scarcely been at all. — H an d le y ®, G. M oule . APR IL 11 Fellowship with Christ “ Called unt^the fellowship o f his Son Jesus Christ our Lord” (1 Cor. 1:9). The first thing for our soul’s health, the first thing for our own usefulness, is to keep ottf'selves in perpetual communion with the Lord Jesus, and to see that the vital spirituality of our religion is main tained over and above everything else in the world. . . .. Nothing gives the believer so much joy as fellowship' with Christ. . . . Where can. such sweetness be found as we have tasted in communion with our Beloved? If you know anything of the inner life, you will confess that our high est, purest, and most'endiiafing joys must be the fruit of the tree of life which is in the midst of the paradise of God. —C h arles H addon S puhgeon S I s A PR IP 12 Centering Attention on the Risen Christ “H e is not here, but is risen” (Lk. 24:6). Your small cljild received a present at Christmas.' . The present was in a pretty red box. To your surprise, that baby boy ignored the present and gave all his atten tion to the little red box in which it came. So it is with the^'church. God made his Gift—a glorious Person; but for the most part the churches have only commemo rative holiday^Avils Christmas and Easter—how they stand ou t! What pomp and show 1 . . . Pageant and sentiment, picture and poetry — but where is the Person? . . . Let us remem ber that we have in our midst a living Person. Let us fix mind and heart on Him. And after Easter Sunday is gone,: let us have fifty-one other Easters in the year. Remember that on the Lord’s Day we celebrate each week the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. He is risen! He lives!— W ill H . H o u g h to n . APR IL 13 Without Sight “ Blessed are they that have not seenj and yet have believed" (John 20:29)'. W e all count the blessedness o f Thomas as something very wonderful: Christ manifesting Himself and allowing Thomas to touch His hands and His side. No wonder that this blessedness can find no words but those of holy adoration: “My Lord and my God.” Has there ever been higher expression of the overwhelming nearness and glory of God? And yet Christ said: “ Because thou hast seen me, thou hast believed: blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed.” True, living faith gives a sense o f Christ’s
APR IL 7 Why We Are in the World
“I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world" (John 17:15). In spite of all that is out’lq f order and harmony, and in opposition to God and the best interests of man in the world, there are many respects in which this is a good world. It is probably the. best world in the universe for the development and exercise of faith. And faith, with its connected graces, is the true riches of the soul, and the current coin in the kingdom of God. God is more concerned about the development of the soul in faith than He is about any physical comfort or any kind of temporal prosperity . . . As far as we know, this is the only world where the conditions necessary to the development and exercise of faith exist. H - K . M . M c R it c h ie . APR IL 8 God Closed the Door “A fter they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bitkynia: but the Spirit suffered them noif’ (Acts 16:7). God closes doors. How oft when we’ve assayed To work in some Bithynia, ibi; our soul Burned with desire in Asia fair to tell The blessed gospel, ere we reached the goal God closed the door. We could not know, God did not tell us then Another door awaited o’er the sea. All seemed so dark, uncertain. Did our Lord Not know our zeal to tell His love, that He Should close the door? Ah, yes, He knew. A Macedonian call To greater service, blpssed of heaven above Revealed to us the Father’s guiding hand. And then we knew God’s purpose, when in love He closed the door. — M abel B ro w n D e n iso n , in the Sunday School Times..1?': APR IL 9 Hallelujah— What a Saviour! “ Christ died for our "sins according to the Scriptures” (1 Cor. 15:3). Christ came into this world and went out of it in exact accord with God’s Word . . . The world makes much of His birth day, and yet it murdered Him, crucified Him between two thieves just outside the gate of Jerusalem! The Word of God, however, makes much o f His death-day. . . . The emphasis lies, not on His life—• precious and beautiful as it was, all lived for God—but on His death-day, for in and by and through His death was it possible for God to identify Himself with sinners. When He died on the cross, the veil of the temple was rent from top to bottom, signi fying that the way was now wide open for every sinner to come into the pres ence o f God with none other sacrifice or priesthood than Christ’s. What a mes sage ! What a salvation! What a Saviour! — A r t h u r W. R eh feldt . APR IL 10 Wonderful Love “Behold, what manner o f love the Father hath bestowed upon us” (1 John 3:1).
