Un incendie dévastateur détruit une maison

L’alarme générale a été sonnée et ce sont les équipes de Saint-Al- bert, Limoges, Embrun et Casselman qui ont travaillé d’arrache-pied pendant plu- sieurs heures, arrosant sans arrêt la maison enflammée sur les deux étages. Selon les pompiers sur place, aucune per- sonne ne se trouvait à l’intérieur aumoment du désastre. C’est un homme seul qui occu- perait les lieux mais qui était absent lorsque le sinistre a commencé. La maison est une perte totale.

Les pompiers volontaires d’Embrun ont enfin pris possession de leur toute nouvelle caserne de pompiers qui a pignon sur rue au 1128, route 300, à Embrun. La cérémonie officielle devrait avoir lieu au début du mois d’avril. Rappelons que le coût total des travaux est estimé à un peu plus de 2 millions$ auquel le programme Initiative d’investissement dans l’infrastructure municipale du gouvernement de l’Ontario (IIIM) a octroyé 750 000$.

Anthony withdraws candidacy Doug Anthony of Russell announced he has officially withdrawn his candidacy as a councillor for Russell Township in the upcoming 2014 municipal elections. Anthony is an RCMP superintendent and stated that on March 18 he was referred to a clause in the RCMP’s regulations stat- ing any RCMP member running for Coun- cil must take a leave of absence from the Force over the period of the election. He says he, as well as others, was unaware of the clause and he apologized. He thanked supporters and said he regrets causing inconvenience.

EMBRUN | Russell Township staff have to do a bit of extra bookkeeping work thanks to a change in the provincial gas tax allow- ance setup. The provincial government has amended the distribution formula for the Ontario gas tax grant provided to all municipalities which have a public transit system. Instead of the paying the grant out in one lump sum for the regular year, the gas tax grant will be paid out in two separate sums dur- ing the fiscal year period. Russell Township is entitled to $67,514 in provincial gas tax allowance because it has a transit service. So the township will re- ceive half of that, at $33,757, for the end of the 2013 portion of the current fiscal year. The remaining half will come towards later near the end of the 2013-2014 fiscal period. Council approved a recommendation from administration to create a special as-
