Remembering Our Victoria Crosses
Our two boys, Timothy and Ben, both read their passages nothing less than superbly - not too fast, speaking up with confidence and looking very smart in their CCF uniform.
On Saturday 28 May representatives of the College were present at a ceremony at the Lewisham War Memorial, which honoured 100 years since the death of Lt Richard B. B. Jones VC (09-14). The Ceremony at Lewisham War Memorial site was magnificent with Dulwich College playing a full role in the event through Cadet RSM Timothy Makower (05-16) and Cadet Warrant Officer Ben Schlossman (09-16).
Remembrance of Lt Richard Jones of the Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, a second stone was unveiled in Remembrance of Major Francis Harvey VC RM, killed in the Battle of Jutland. The Ceremony was much as you would imagine - a Royal Marine Band, introduction by the Mayor, Sir Steve Bullock, and various prayers, summaries of both actions and readings of citations. A Remembrance Service and the Last Post also took place before the actual unveilings.

Lieutenant Richard B. B. Jones , VC (1897-1916), was at Dulwich College from 1909 to 1914. He was killed in action at Vimy Ridge on 21st May 1916 holding, with his platoon, ground recently captured from the enemy. By his fine example Lieutenant Jones kept his men focused and calm. He shot no less than 15 of the enemy as they advanced, counting them aloud as he did so to encourage his men. When his ammunition was exhausted he stood up to throw a grenade, but tragically was shot through the head. He was 19 years old when he died. The Remembrance service honoured his valiant contribution and martyrdom to the First World War. The College has commissioned replica stones for each of the six OAs who were awarded Victoria Crosses. Two of these stones were laid on Founder’s Day, One for Lt Jones and another for Maj. Stewart Loudoun-Shand , who was killed on 1 July 1916 at the Battle of the Somme.
