5 STELLAR YEARS

Why I Love Working at Jones Smiles A few weeks back, I celebrated my fifth anniversary at Jones Smiles. Or, maybe, I should say we celebrated — Dr. Jones and the team put together a sweet card for me, and we all ordered in from a local Greek place and had a good time hanging out and chatting together. Times like that speak to the tight bonds we’ve formed with each other around the office. I can’t imagine working anywhere else for these past five years.

Sometimes, people wonder how a person ends up as a dental hygienist. For me, it was always a pretty clear path. When I was a little girl, I used to enjoy my trips to the dentist. I never understood the kids who dreaded them. I loved that sparkling clean feeling I would have after getting my teeth professionally cleaned. As I got a little older, I began to realize that I wanted to follow a career that would enable me to help people, to make an impact on people’s lives. Soon after, I put two and two together and determined that dental school was the way to go. When I interviewed for my position at Jones Smiles, they asked me, “What’s your favorite part of being a hygienist?” A couple of clear answers came to my mind at that moment. The first is, of course, the relationships you form with the patients. Those routine checkups add up. I’ve formed personal connections with almost every one of my patients. I can ask them how their sick dog has been doing, how their youngest’s ballet recital went, or about their upcoming trip to Costa Rica. I especially love working with the elderly. So many of them have been neglected in the past, and when you treat them right, they quickly recognize that you have their best interests at heart. And, of course, they’re full of incredible

stories. Every once and a while, I’ll take a walk over to the nearby Oaks Nursing Home with some donuts, just to check on my friends and see how they’re doing. The second reason I love working in dental hygiene has to do with my life outside of work. I have four children: my 14-year- old son, Tucker, my twin 12-year-old girls, Payton and Reagon, and my 11-year-old, Stephanie. This job allows me to focus on them. It lets me be the best mother I can be and take care of my home, my kids, and my husband, while still fulfilling that mission of service to others. Truly, I couldn’t ask for a better place to work. I’m grateful that I’ve been able to be a part of the practice these past five years, and I am looking forward to the many years to come. – Shae Odum

WATERMELONS: THE NEXT HEALTH FOOD TREND?

For the past couple of years it’s seemed like everyone is trying to incorporate kale into their diet. From kale chips to kale smoothies, the nutritious leafy green is everywhere. It’s still immensely popular, and its impressive nutrition cannot be denied (it’s packed with vitamins A, C, and K), but it’s no longer the new kid on the block. Another health food has entered the scene, and it’s a food you already know and love: watermelon. But it’s not just watermelon that’s making waves. It’s something a little deeper. Watermelon seeds. Most of us have probably never considered using watermelon seeds for anything except a seed-spitting contest. It turns out, like many other seeds — pumpkin, sunflower, chia, flax, and so on — watermelon seeds pack a major nutritional punch. They are a great source of protein, B vitamins, and magnesium. Like other types of seeds, you’ll get the most nutrition out of the sprouted and shelled variety. Eating the seeds right out of the fruit won’t do much for you, as they aren’t easily digested.

Watermelon water. Yes, another kind of water! And no, it’s not just juice. Watermelon water is pressed from the whole fruit, including the rind. It’s made much like coconut water, and it has a similar consistency, but a much fruitier flavor. Like watermelon seeds, the drink is packed with nutrients, such as lycopene and potassium. Plus, it’s effective at keeping you hydrated, serving as a source of critical antioxidants and electrolytes. Because of this, it’s quickly becoming the post-workout drink. Just be sure to look for watermelon water that has no added sugar.

GIVE YOUR SMILE THE MAKEOVER YOU’VE ALWAYS WANTED

Imagine you’ve had to constantly hide your smile your entire life. You’re embarrassed by your teeth. It’s something you’ve endured for years, and has held you back in countless situations, both socially and professionally. Maybe you’ve had to endure years of dental work, to the point where you have mismatched teeth from old fillings, dental crowns, and bridges.

Whatever the reason, you are fed up with the weird glances from strangers, friends, and even family.

But here’s the good news: It doesn’t have to be this way. We’ve helped literally hundreds of people from Georgia and beyond get their smile, and their life, back. Here are just a few options: Crowns are perfect for a tooth that is severely discolored, broken, worn down, or weakened from multiple fillings. It’s essentially a cap that is placed over a tooth to restore its shape and size. The best part is that they look, function, and feel like a regular tooth. Porcelain veneers are extremely thin shells that cover the surface of your teeth and are perfect for discolored, worn down, chipped, or broken teeth. We can also use veneers to fix misaligned, chipped, or gapped teeth. Best of all, we can make over your smile with veneers in only two visits! It’s a good option if you don’t want to wear aligners or braces.

KöR Whitening is a procedure perfect for teeth that have been stained over time. If your teeth look structurally fine but are severely stained, this could be the ideal procedure. Some options only take 1 to 14 days! Invisalign uses trays of smooth, comfortable, and virtually invisible plastic to gradually and gently shift your teeth into place. They’re much more effective than many orthodontists would have you believe, and they’re even removable! Six Month Smiles is a long-term program where the teeth that are easily visible in your smile are gently moved into the desired position using a new, low-force method. It’s a much shorter, less invasive process than braces — it may be the perfect option for you!

CACHE YOUR DREAMS IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Geocaching Marries Technology and Recreation

Treasure hunters once searched for caches of gold, priceless artifacts, precious gems, and other valuables. Now that just about any kind of outdoor adventure can be planned and tracked via smartphone, many outdoor enthusiasts look for geocaches instead. You can spend your afternoons hunting for hidden trinkets, and all you need is a GPS. While the term is relatively new, the concept is not. Geocaching has its roots in the 150-year-old game of letterboxing, in which people hid boxes containing small handwritten letters in outdoor locations. Once exclusively a tool of the U.S. Military, Global Positioning Systems are essential to geocaching. The hobby officially began in 2000, when accurate GPS readings became available to the masses due to the military’s removal of Selective Availability, a program intended to limit non-military use of the system. Once people had access to the technology and its incredible accuracy, it didn’t take long for them to begin concealing and hunting caches throughout the world. Geocaching originally

required the purchase of an expensive handheld GPS unit, but now it can be done using a smartphone.

Location data for geocaching is readily available online, and caches can be found in nearly any area in the world. The easiest way to get started is to create a free account at Geocaching.com. Once you have an account, visit the “Hide & Seek a Cache” page, enter your postal code, and click “search.” Then, simply choose any geocache from the list, and enter the coordinates of the geocache into your device. After you find the hidden geocache, sign the online logbook and return the geocache to its original location, along with its new treasure. One really cool aspect of geocaching is how it marries technology with the great outdoors. It’s every parent’s solution to getting their child out from in front of the TV. Plus, it can be a fun side activity to add to any outdoor adventure. Most importantly, geocaching is an inexpensive way to spend quality time in nature, alone or with others.
