Name: Nafaa Dorar Title: Dynamics and Nature of the Coverage of the Syrian Conflict by BBC, CNN and Al Jazeera TV Channels Institution: Peoples’ Friendship University of Russia (RUDN) Country: Russia Date: 2016 Language: Russian Abstract: The Syrian conflict, which started in March 2011 as peaceful protest movement, transformed within months into a civil war involving regional and internal forces. The dynamics of the conflict depends almost entirely on the position of both western and regional powers. The media have also played a significant role in covering the conflict and creating dominant narratives. In this regard, three global news channels have been selected for this comparative investigation, BBC, CNN and AI Jazeera. This selection is justified by the fact that that these TV channels are the most influential in today’s global information market. This study analyzed a sample of more than 300 news items about the Syrian conflict (both in English and Arabic) from BBC, CNN and Al Jazeera (120, 100 and 150, respectively, from March 2011 to 2016). The study finds that each side of the conflict made tremendous efforts to bring media coverage of the conflict to its advantage. The media coverage of this conflict relied largely on mutual accusations of falsifying facts in various photo and video materials, in diametrically opposed interpretations of the same events.
