Sheikh Title: Effectiveness of Professional Standards in Television Newscasts: Comparative Study between Khartoum and Al Jazeera Satellite Channels Institution: Sudan University of Science and Technology Country: Sudan Date: 2021 Language: Arabic Abstract: This research deals with the events of December 2018 that received wide coverage by local, Arab and international media. The study aims at identifying the prevalence of professional standards in media coverage of those events by analyzing and comparing the content of news bulletins in Khartoum and Al Jazeera satellite channels. The researcher used content analysis methodology to analyze a selected regular sample for the main news bulletins of the two channels broadcast over four months, from December 19, 2018 to April 11, 2019. The study findings showed that both channels used various explanatory methods such as pictures and videos of the protests to achieve dazzling and attract viewers’ attention. The study also concluded that the news materials used in Al Jazeera’s coverage were self-sourced. This is partly explained by the fact that the channel has a large network of correspondents who managed to report stories from different angles. Khartoum Channel, on the contrary, relied mostly on external sources and used news agencies at a high rate. The study recommends that Khartoum channel provide training opportunities for journalists to develop their professional skills.
