The researcher adopts an analytical approach that incorporates the interdisciplinary analytical tools of critical discourse analysis within the comparative framework of translation studies. The study examines a corpus compiled from the inter- lingual output of two Arab-based news networks, Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya, and two Western-based news networks, BBC and CNN, in their coverage of the refugee crisis between 2 September 2015 and 2 March 2016. The findings contribute to a greater understanding of the role that news translators play as intercultural mediators, and offer a robust framework for explaining the tension in the mediative role of news translators between challenging and reinforcing ideologically motivated discourses that emanate from disparate geopolitical settings. It shows how the role of news translators involves two aspects: a reactive mediation that challenges the hegemonic framing of global North, and a proactive mediation that shapes the original framing of news organizations for the intended target audience.
