Name: Irene de Mol Title: The Impact of Al Jazeera on a Global Scale: A Research on Balance of Power and the Role of the Arab Satellite Channel Al Jazeera Institution: Universiteit Utrecht Country: Netherland Date: 2005 Language: Dutch Abstract: Did Al Jazeera break the hegemony of the Western media in the Arab and Western world? To what extent does Al Jazeera’s journalism go against the Western media domination over global news flow? This thesis tries to answer these questions by examining the factors that contributed to the creation of Al Jazeera. It seeks to identify the differences and similarities in news coverage between Western news channels and Al Jazeera. The study also looks into the power structure to see if a particular form of government determines the degree of control over the media. Theoretically, the study draws on cultural imperialism and the relationship between political, economic and cultural forms of domination. It aims to expose the power structures at the level of global news, with emphasis on the Western influence on the global media market. The importance of this study stems from the fact that it sheds light on global media systems and their interrelationships. It provides an assessment of whether theories of cultural imperialism and cultural power relations are still applicable and whether the discourse of globalization complements its possible shortcomings.
