This context raises a number of important questions on how cultural factors shape media coverage of the same event in two regions of the world. In this particular case, the questions revolve around the way in which CNN America framed its coverage of the cartoon issue and the controversy around it, and how this framing differed from that of Al Jazeera as a news network based in the Middle East. The approach to measuring and analyzing framing in this study employed combined interpretive analysis and systematic content quantification. This approach aims to derive significance, not only by counting all the occurrences of images implying the greater their frequency the greater their significance, but rather the narrative and context of these frames. The findings show significant differences between the two channels based on visual framing, narrative structure as well as visual structure.
