Name: Susanna Dakash Title: Worlds in Opposition: A Critical Analysis of News Treatment of the Situation in Gaza in the Discourse of French, Finnish and Arab Television News (the Cases of YLE 1, France 2 and Al Jazeera) Institution: University of Helsinki Country: Finland Date: 2006 Language: French Abstract: This dissertation investigates the influence of ideology on the news discourse of three different TV channels, the Finnish YLE 1, the French France 2 and the Arab Al Jazeera. This study addresses the impact of the dominant western ideology in the news discourse as represented by the Finnish YLE 1 and the French France 2, while the Arabic language Al Jazeera channel represents the counter discourse with a different ideological framework. The research uses critical discourse analysis to analyze news pieces from these three media outlets during their coverage of the conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis and Israel’s 2005 withdrawal from Gaza. In these discourses, the dissertation compares the the themes and priorities of the discourses to see what is emphasized and what is obscured. The western media tends to show other ideologies as dangerous, illegal, and threatening with the Palestinians being ‘others’, while Israel belongs to the West. The findings show that the western media (YLE 1 and France 2) view Israel more favorably than the Palestinians, while A Jazeera presents the Palestinians in a better light than the Israelis.
