20. Name: Giovana Sanchez Title: Al Jazeera: Another Opinion Institution: Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina Country: Brazil Date: 2006 Language: Portuguese Abstract:

This study investigates the news-making process and the role Al Jazeera is playing in changing Arab mediia. Founded in 1996 and headquartered in Qatar, the station was the first independent channel in the Middle East. Al Jazeera is more than a news channel. It is rather a media phenomenon, which breaks taboos and discusses controversial issues in the Arab and Islamic world like sexuality, women’s issues and religious extremism. With news programmes, talk shows and documentaries, running 24 hours a day, Al Jazeera operates with an extended network of nearly 40 offices and more than 100 correspondents and reporters around the world. The importance of researching this topic lies not only in the originality of the channel’s content, but also in the lack of research on Al Jazeera in Portuguese. The study also addresses the relationship between the station and Latin America, especially after the launch of the network’s English channel with a global reach and agenda. To complement the theoretical investigation with an empirical analysis, the researcher conducted a number of interviews with Al Jazeera staff at the channel’s headquarters in Doha.
