Name: Khalil Al Agha Title: The Impact of Political Factors on Structuring the Administration of Visual Media in the Arab World: A Case Study of Al Jazeera Network Institution: University of Westminster Country: United Kingdom Date: 2007 Language: English Abstract: This study investigates the impact of political factors on the administrative environment of Al Jazeera to find out if the network has formed a viable administrative system that can be sustainable without the direct support of the Qatari government. This this end, the study explores the cultural and religion environment, the customs and traditions, and the influence of Western culture on the patterns of management in the Arab world in general. It also discusses the relationship between the Qatari political system and Al Jazeera’s management system and compares the latter with the rest of media institutions in the Gulf region. The study assumes that the impact of political factors on Al Jazeera changes if changes happen at the top of the country’s political hierarchy since the success of internal management alone is not sustainable. This assumption is informed by the long experience of relations between Arab political systems and the media management systems in the Arab world in general. Besides, the factors that control the management patterns are rooted in the Arab mentality, as well as in the social, cultural and religious setting.
