Name: Koen Leurs Title: Framing Terrorism: Good versus Evil: An Analytical Study of Al Jazeera and CNN Institution: Utrecht University Country: Netherlands Date: 2007 Language: English Abstract: This study provides a theoretical framework for analyzing news reports on terrorism. In this study, the researcher is particularly interested in formulating the theoretical background that would enable him to grasp the different ways in which the media present terrorist actions, as well as to get an impression of possible implications of specific framing processes. This study is divided into three main parts: the first part defines and describes the research topic, by looking at the history and the different angles to understand and analyze terrorism. More specifically, the emphasis is put on what the researcher perceives as the key element in recent ‘Jihadist’ terrorism acts. Terrorists have become more interested in achieving maximum media coverage for their acts and reaching out to broader audiences than the group of people directly affected by their actions. The second part focuses on framing theories and the ways in which ‘the other’ is depicted, in order to address the media representation of terrorist performances. The third part tries to apply Habermas’s theoretical approach to provide a solid framing and more critical perspective on this complex issue.
