Name: Karima Ziada Title: Al Jazeera’s View of the Iraqi-American Crisis from the Winter of 2000 to the Fall of 2002 Institution: Université Jean Moulin Lyon 3 Country: France Date: 2008 Language: French Abstract: This study examines Al Jazeera’s coverage of the 2003 US-led war on Iraq, focusing on the channel’s flagship talk show “The Opposite Direction”. The study analyzed a selected sample of episodes from this programme to identify Al Jazeera’s editorial line in covering this crisis. To assess Al Jazeera’s journalistic practice and commitment to professional standards, including its own code of ethics, the study employed quantitative and qualitative methodology to examine “The Opposite Direction” panels, which discussed, directly or indirectly the United States and Iraq. The findings concluded that Al Jazeera’s coverage of the war on Iraq showed some bias towards Iraq, and that goes with its editorial line as an Arab channel that prioritizes Arabs causes. However, it was clear that the other side of the story was also given the opportunity to express its views. The United States’ voice was present, not only through American officials, but also through intellectuals and analysts with views opposed to those supporting Iraq. The channel gave both parties a platform to express their views and remained consistent with its motto “The Opinion and the other Opinion”.
