News is a kind of text through which journalists negotiate their attitudes and feelings with readers. This study investigates two issues in this regard, the types of attitudes used in news articles, and the way in which attitudes are used to express feelings in these articles. The research uses qualitative descriptive methodology to describe and analyze the appraisal devices used in a sample of articles taken from Al Jazeera news channel. Since appraisals in written texts concern the choice of words as devices to realize people’s attitudes and feelings, the unit of analysis in this study is appraisal device. The articles were first broken down into chunks and then, each chunk was analyzed for appraisal devices. The findings showed that journalists employed all three types of attitudes to express people’s feelings: affecting, judgement and appreciation. Throughout the articles, journalists are found to be highly evaluative in expressing their attitudes. They employ various resources of amplification to dynamically mobilize attitudes.
