BBC, CNN and Al Jazeera Reports Institution: University of Liverpool Country: United Kingdom Date: 2008 Language: English Abstract:
The study investigates evaluation in media reporting based on the examination of nine representative news reports taken from three globally influential media networks: BBC, CNN and Al Jazeera. The topic of all these reports, three from each agency, revolves around the fifth anniversary of the Iraq War, known as the US Invasion of Iraq. The study attempts to identify evaluation patterns in three sets of news reports in order to find out the perspective of the media agency that released each set of reports. It seeks to figure out the relationship between the perspectives of these media agencies and the socio-cultural context in which they broadcast. The study draws on Martin’s appraisal model, consisting of three systems: affect, appreciation and judgment. First, the reports are analyzed to identify appraisal patterns. Then, through a questionnaire, the perspectives of viewers are drawn out to find out the possible relationship between each media agency and the socio-cultural context in which it operates. The results suggest that, the occurrence possibility of appreciation is higher than judgment, and the occurrence possibility of judgment is slightly higher than affect.
