62. Name: Cecilia De Luca Title: The Al Jazeera Effect: From and ‘Island’ to an All-news ‘Archipelago’ in the Middle East Institution: Sapienza University of Rome Country: Italy Date: 2009 Language: Italian Abstract: This study analyzes the innovative role of Al Jazeera, the first Arab satellite news channel. The success of this channel lies in its ability to establish itself as a main source of global information and a voice for the voiceless in the marginalized world, which was traditionally dominated by Western media. As a new media and cultural phenomenon, the rise of Al Jazeera brought with it a series of developments of political and strategic nature in the Middle East. The intertwining of these evolutions constitutes the main topic of this research since the dynamics of the media cannot function separately from those of the political sphere. The study adopts a descriptive analytical methodology and discusses the state of Arab media both before and after the advent of Al Jazeera. The first part deals with the establishment of Al Jazeera as an Arab- speaking news channel, contextualizing it in the historical evolution of Arab media. The second part analyzes the rise of Al Jazeera as a global player in the world information system and looks at its impact, both at the regional and global levels.
