Name: Xiao YuMin Title: Competition and Introspection of International News Discourse: Observing the Nation Construction Strategies of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict News Coverage between Al Jazeera and CNN Institution: Shanghai National Chiao Tung University Country: China Date: 2010 Language: Chinese Abstract: This comparative study uses critical discourse analysis and aims at observing how Al Jazeera and CNN news channels construct their media discourses regarding the issue of nation construction. The study reviews different modalities of nation construction in the existing literature. As for the methodology, the study employs quantitative content analysis and qualitative critical discourse analysis to compare the news coverage of Al Jazeera and CNN and find out about different characteristics of their media discourse. The research findings showed that, although the political stances of the two channels were different, their approach to nation construction strategies in their coverage of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict was quite similar. The study also found that the CNN news discourse was polarizing and discriminating when it comes to Palestinians’ nation representation. Comparatively, in Al Jazeera news discourse did not always fully observe the professional journalistic principles. Al Jazeera channel allowed its correspondents to voice their own opinions when they describe the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and sometimes use emotional strategies when they address the issue of national identity.
