78. Name: Marthe Eskildsen Ødegaard Title: Competition in International News: An Analysis of Al Jazeera English and CNN International Priority of their Telecast and their
Coverage of Terror Resolution Institution: University of Oslo Country: Norway Date: 2010 Language: Norwegian Abstract:
This comparative study analyzes the newscasts on two international news channels. It shows how Al Jazeera English and CNN International prioritize news according to geopolitical relevance as per universally valid criteria, genre and convention. By undertaking a comparative analysis of news on these two channels, the study reveals the differences and similarities in perspectives and editorial policies guiding their media coverage. The researcher examined a sample of news items using qualitative and quantitative methodologies. The quantitative examination shows what regions and news topics get higher priority in the telecasts of the two channels, while the qualitative part consists of an analysis of the channels’ coverage of terrorism as a topical example. The research findings showed that the two channels prioritize their news differently in terms of regions and topics, but they tend to prioritize more according to regions. The main difference is that CNN tends to cover more news of entertainment and personal interest, while Al Jazeera focuses more on politics. The analysis of the channels’ coverage of terrorism indicates that the concept is gradually on its way out of the media sphere.
