Institution: Gulf University Country: Kingdom of Bahrain Date: 2010 Language: Arabic Abstract:
This study examines the coverage of Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya, as the most influential Arab channels in the region, for the Israeli aggression on Gaza. It investigates a sample of news content from both channels to see how they covered the war and handled related events. The researcher chose to focus on the Israeli aggression on Gaza, as a case study, because it represented a turning point in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It also highlights the extent of the internal rift between the Palestinian factions and its impact on the way TV channels in the Arab world aligned themselves vis-à-vis the Palestinian struggle. The research findings showed that both Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya channels played a significant role in covering the Israeli war on Gaza. Their coverage included military, political, and humanitarian issues. This was done through continuous coverage of the aggression, starting on the first day of the Israeli bombardment. Each channel followed its own approach and editorial policy, which prompted the main question of this study regarding the way Al Jazeera and Al Arabiya covered the Israeli war on Gaza.
