Al Jazeera In 1000 Academic Studies

82. Name: Tijs De Geyndt Title: Al Jazeera English and CNN International: Same but a Different? Institution: University of Antwerp Country: Belgium Date: 2010 Language: Dutch Abstract: This study compares between the coverage of Al Jazeera English and CNN International for the war in Afghanistan. The study analyzes website articles covering four recent events within the Afghan conflict. It assesses whether there are noticeable differences in the coverage of the two outlets and defines how these differences manifest themselves. Four variables are compared in the study: the use of sources, the use of frames, the coverage tone, and the layout of the reports. The mix of quantitative and qualitative content analysis shows that CNNI in its articles used proportionally more sources from the international coalition than AJE. There is no difference in the presence of sources that are attributed to the Taliban or Al-Qaida. It also appears that the use of Afghan citizens as a source of information is insufficient in both networks. The use of frames varies according to the event and the message recipient, but when the data is taken together, there are no significant framing differences. The tone of AJE and CNNI’s coverage is similar but the size of headlines and images is generally bigger in CNNI.
