Al Jazeera English has partnered with ‘Livestation’ for internet-based broadcasting, which enables viewers to watch Al Jazeera English and Al Jazeera live worldwide. The multi-platform approach of Al Jazeera makes it successful in rivaling 24/7 news pioneers, such as CNN International and BBC World, and attracting viewers worldwide. However, recent scholarship on Al Jazeera casts little insight into the internet rendering of liveness and the relationship between television and the internet in making live news. This study focuses on liveness, the 24-hour news service, and television’s convergence with new media. It tries to find out how the television studio cooperates and interacts with the web studio in live broadcasting at Al Jazeera English, and how the different divisions of Al Jazeera’s live broadcasting system work together. The study presumes that, the cooperation and interaction between the on-air and online newsrooms of Al Jazeera are not simply a “shovel ware” from television to the website. Rather, Al Jazeera’s live broadcasting system is multi-layered and internal relations may exist in on-air and online newsrooms.
