Al-Fallujah: Two Battle Fields 2004 Institution: Middle East University Country: Jordon Date: 2011 Language: Arabic Abstract:
This study examines the news coverage of Al Jazeera and BBC Arabic websites for the two Fallujah battles in 2004. The study compares a sample of news items and reports published by the two websites from 1 January to 31 December 2004. The comparison focuses on various aspects of the written materials including style, terminology, and news sources. The study employed descriptive methodology, using content analysis. The researcher selected Al Jazeera and BBC websites because they belong to the field of modern electronic media while reflecting two different perspectives, Arabic and Western. The findings showed that the quantity of news materials about Fallujah on Aljazeera website was less the materials posted by the BBC website, although Al Jazeera network had the only news team inside the city during first battle accompanied with many reporters working for the website. The results also showed that Al Jazeera Net relied primarily on Iraqi sources, both formal and informal, and used terminology such as the Iraqi “resistance”. Contrary, the BBC website called the Iraqi fighters “gunmen” and relied mostly on U.S. official sources, both civilian and military.
